When I take pictures it’s basically the same stuff over and over again. A tree! A neat rock! A dozen virtually identical pictures of a pond!

But it’s fun, and we don’t have to pay for rolls of film anymore, which is amazing, and I saw FOUR cute doggos while I was out walking today, so I’m calling it a win.

Since I’m working early today, I set my alarm a little early too. And then, of course, proceeded to dream all night about sleeping through it and being late.

Pretty standard fare. And the job I was late to was sort of a weird amalgamation of my current job and my last job — a little unusual, but not too weird.

But the best part — and I love how in dreams things like this don’t seem weird at all — is that in my absence, Tom Bergeron (yep, host of Dancing With the Stars) had stepped in to open the store and cover for me.

Thanks, dreamscape! I appreciate the assist!

I’ve been trying to figure out a post about work, and how people in power use the phrase “we don’t want you to feel that way” like it’s the end of the conversation, like any discontent you feel after that is your own fault, certainly not theirs (they don’t want you to feel that way), like they bear no responsibility for the structures that created the feeling in the first place, and often won’t even acknowledge that those structures exist and that some benefit from them while some do not.

But it’s not a new story, and it’s been told so many times by better tellers than me, and yet —

But it’s sunny and it’s summer and I have the day off and the cat is sleeping next to the keyboard. And so, the day rolls on.

Happy July!

Here’s this month’s door art:

[This one is two pieces of scrapbooking paper as the background, two strips of border from a 2016 calendar (artwork by Adam Guan), and then another 2016 calendar picture (photograph by Kent Mason)]

Somehow this week I stumbled back into reading Labyrinth fic, which is always a surprise. And I realized I had apparently never bookmarked that one where Sarah becomes the librarian at Hogwarts, which was also a surprise.

Of Dreamers and Journeys, by Mystical_Magician

The Labyrinth changed Sarah in more ways than one. Seven years later she finds herself the librarian at Hogwarts. And she is so much more than the Muggle they believe her to be.

I have been confusing dates all week. What month is this? What year is it?

*This morning I tried to find more information on registering for an event, only to realize (after an embarrassingly long time) that it happened back in 2015.

*Yesterday, I was baffled by why we would be receiving 100+ orders “this week” that were meant to ship in September — finally I figured out that “this week” was part of a calendar event invite *in* September.

I blame the weirdness of the upcoming non-three-day-weekend. My brain thinks ‘holiday weekend!’ and then immediately goes ‘but I’m working Monday?!’ and then ‘but not Tuesday?!?!’ and boom, confusion loop.

It’s 4th of July weekend, and that means it’s time for INDEPENDENCE DAY MOVIE VIEWING! That’s right — at some point this weekend (or possibly on the 4th itself), I will be watching INDEPENDENCE DAY and also INDEPENDENCE DAY 2.

(Did the second movie have a special name? I don’t remember. *ETA: it did — Independence Day Resurgence.)

Because nothing says ‘celebrating our freedom’ like ALIEN SPACESHIPS!

(True story: I am the only-slightly-sheepish owner of both Independence Day movies. There was a special offer!)

I am preparing for this annual event by checking itunes to make sure I didn’t dream up purchasing the movies, and adding popcorn to the grocery list.

The backstory: the local state park has three mountains in it, or at least there are three things that are called mountains.

[Note: this led me to a fascinating look at the difference between hills and mountains, which is far more vague than I expected. None of these three land-forms are higher than 2000 feet, but they are sort of steep, and apparently you can pretty much call something a mountain if you want, so why not?]

Anyway, so there’s three mountains. One of them is the popular one — it’s got an interesting summit with nice views, and plenty of space for people to spread out at the top and have a snack. Plus, there’s a fire tower — what’s not to love?

Then there’s the tallest one — no real summit to speak of, but it gets the glow of being the tallest. And the trail is cool.

And then there’s the one in the middle. The shortest one. No loop trail, just up and back. But I’d never been up it, so out I went on Sunday, headed for the middle mountain.

AND IT WAS AMAZING. I was both surprised and delighted. The selfie I took at the top did not manage to capture my ‘I was not expecting this, can you believe it’ sensation. The trail sort of meandered around before suddenly dropping me off at a beautiful grassy summit with a super-nice view of the surrounding park. (I mean, only in one direction, but that direction was excellent!)

Gosh, it sure is Monday today. Would you look at that. Who would have thought.

some more random thoughts for the day:

*If your workplace is giving you July 4th off (Tuesday) but not the 3rd, today’s a great day to start complaining about it, if you haven’t already.

*How did I not notice that Billy is wearing Jason’s color in the final scene of the Power Rangers movie?

*After bargaining away nearly all of my usual blankets to the cat, cooler temps last night led me to add one of the sofa blankets to my bed, and I did not realize how amazing that would be.

*Why is driving a car so hard?

*I really hope I like Pacific Rim 2.

*The cat has an innate talent for walking across the keyboard and opening itunes. Once he managed to start a movie. I think my computer may like the cat more than it likes me.

*Yes, it’s still Monday.

I was charmed and intrigued by the google doodle for Oskar Fischinger this week.

Oskar Fischinger’s 117th Birthday

Very fun to play with, plus I always enjoy learning more about the backstory behind the doodles.

“I feel incredibly proud of my family and am delighted to be the daughter of Oskar and Elfriede Fischinger. It means so much to me to see this celebration of my father’s art.”

Between Stimulus and Response (There Is A Space), by blackidyll

My first thought after I finished reading this fic was ‘I enjoyed that so much more than I thought I would!’

Plus, cats! (PS the cats are briefly in danger but are totally okay!)

“What the hell.” It’s not a question, but Q figures the way she’s phrased it works well enough: What the hell are you doing, and what the hell are you doing here.

Last night I dreamed about tidying, and also my plants. I mean, my dream!plants were pretty neat, but it turns out dream!me also is bad at watering properly.

That’s got nothing to do with work, but it *is* Thursday, and I *am* going to work, and I didn’t feel like I had much else to say, so the dream thing kind of snuck in there.

I also dreamed there was a bird in my room, and actually woke up enough to think ‘wait, there isn’t really a bird in here, right?’ (Not to worry, it was outside. Or possibly imaginary; it’s not like I woke up all the way to check.)

No work thoughts right now, still trying to figure out the Power Rangers movie. Here’s what’s tripping me up: there were other spaceships.

(Okay, I’m only guessing they were space-flight-capable. But it seems like a safe guess.)

When Zordon does his flashback explanation, multiple ships fly overhead. So who were they? Not Zordon’s team. They didn’t seem too invested in helping either Zordon or Rita, and apparently they didn’t stick around (or come back) for the power coins or the zeo crystal.

Also confusing: Zordon’s explanation of Goldar, etc, seemed like he was describing something that had happened before. (And Rita did a whole ‘oh, I missed you’ thing with Goldar.) But when? I mean, unless she tried for multiple zeo crystals and failed every time? Or tried and succeeded, I guess — Zordon said she would gain the power of life and death, or whatever, and she did seem remarkably unable to die, although I thought that was maybe just the power coin.

And THEN there’s the question of why Alpha apparently kept the situation a secret for 65 million years. Not calling in to the home office, eh buddy? Not letting anyone know the ship survived and you put Zordon in the wall? Why not, exactly?

So what I’m saying is that I’m pretty sure Zordon was lying a lot, or at least mis-representing the situation. A lot.

Summer sleeping is so different than winter sleeping. In the winter it’s all layers and blankets and socks and having a warm cocoon till morning, then turning on all the lights to make it seem like daytime even when it’s still dark out.

Summer sleeping is one blanket and no socks and sticking my feet off the side of the bed to catch the breeze, and waking up to birds and wind chimes and kids in the parking lot and sunshine in the window even before it’s time to get up.

Both are good! Just a very different feeling.

1. This movie was approximately 10 million times better when I could fast-forward over the parts I didn’t want to see (both car crashes, most of Rita’s scenes).

2. I tend to watch everything with closed captioning on, because reading is easier than listening for me. (Also the sound quality on my laptop is not stellar.) Very helpful in this movie!

3. Zordon’s explanation makes less and less sense the more you think about it. Alpha’s too. You had 65 million years to come up with a better plan, buddy.

4. I absolutely headcanon that Jason’s sword keeps following him around like his power coin, and he can’t figure out how to get it to go away with the rest of his armor, so when he showed up at the ship to drop it off and Zordon was all ‘You should keep that,’ he was all ‘I’ll come back for it’ on the outside, but on the inside he was thinking ‘play it cool, ha, yes, I’ll come back for it, unless it just *shows up randomly* again,’ and he thinks *STAY* at it as loudly as he can before leaving.

Okay, so last summer was all about the drought, and I think I over-adapted to drought conditions, because I am still seriously confused by what to do with all this humidity.

Me: “It’s 68F degrees, a beautiful cool morning!”

Also me: “…And yet I’m sweating and every time I move I feel like I need to lie down and take a break.”

Me: “But I can see the leaves moving from the breeze! It’s so nice out!”

Also me: “Except that everything is damp and this is awful.”

Basically I have no idea what to do with this weather. A special apology to all my plants; I really am trying my best.

Wonder Woman fic!

i don’t know where i’m going but i’m on my way, by alchemystique

There are so many great fics out there right now, it’s amazing — a wealth of choices. Gotta love Steve heckling Bruce Wayne about the bat thing, though.

“This is crazy, you all are crazy, and I have no idea what you’re trying to accomplish but if Diana thinks you’re worth her time you gotta have something going for you. And speaking of Diana, I always thought her armor was out there, but you fight crime dressed up as a bat, pal, that’s weird.”

Worked an earlier shift today, which was weird, but not unpleasant. The cat is confused. I am also confused, so I am at a loss to assist. What am I doing? What time is it?

It is 7 pm. I am doing the 9 am things. It feels like the start of a shift work gothic post.
