Any time there’s a holiday weekend, the workplace is all aflutter with talk of weekend plans. Which is great! But there are times when I need an escape answer.

Because sometimes it’s like this:

1. I have plans that I would prefer not to invite commentary on.

–OR–

2. I have plans that consist mainly of ‘not going to work, maybe take a nap?’ And there’s only so many times you can say that before it just gets boring to talk about.

Which means it’s good to have something new and vague to say every once in a while. This week I was inspired, and came up with:

I haven’t decided yet; I’m going to play it by ear.

It was super effective! I mean, people might have assumed that I meant ‘I’ll choose between my many potential exciting plans in a spontaneous way’ and not ‘I’ll either be a hermit on Sunday, or on Sunday *and* Monday,’ but that’s on them.

Living the short hair life:

1. Wake up to hair Doing A Thing. Stare at mirror, thinking ‘but I didn’t even sleep on that side.’

2. Ignore it until it’s too late to shower.

3. Get hair wet, brush it, cross fingers.

4. Hair dries looking exactly the same.

5. Add gel so it looks like you did it on purpose. Admit nothing.

Aww, this is one of those Shadowhunter AUs where everyone has improbable amounts of free time and even more improbable amounts of disposable income and they take naps and cook meals and fall in love. Super enjoyable fluff.

There are many strange office phenomenons, but perhaps one of the strangest is the office baby shower. (At least where I work. It’s always possible that we are an outlier and that other people have figured out how to throw an office baby shower in a non-awkward way.)

Anyway, the last time one of these was held, the company provided a cake. Not even kidding, the message on the cake read ‘Good Luck!’

We have another shower scheduled for today, and I can only hope that it goes smoothly.

(The good news is that someone else is making the cake this time, so it will be both less awkwardly messaged and also super delicious.)

You know those days when you’re just like:
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!’

(But you go to work anyway, because the screaming will maybe seem less out of place there.)

In other news:
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!’

Somehow, without really noticing or setting out to do so, I have ended up with multiple adventures in the same year. Next up is the September hike, which will hopefully be awesome.

Weather’s been a little extra interesting this summer, so it’s a bit of a toss-up whether we’ll be hot or cold (or both!). I did get this reassuring(?) update this week:

Snow will be a sure sign that we need to turn around.

Yes, yes it will.

Shadowhunters fandom, r u ok? I only ask because I’ve recently been reading some fic (thanks blueMeridian!) and it seems to be approximately 90% ‘everyone is happy and gets enough sleep and eats pancakes.’ Which is totally up my alley and awesome, but I worry your show isn’t treating you right.

In light of that, here is my three step plan for how I deal with troubling canon:

1. Ignore all canon.

2. Interact with the source material solely through watching gifsets and tumblr vids of people hugging.

3. Read fanfic, especially AUs where everyone takes naps a lot. (Shadowhunters fandom seems to have this AU fully mastered, so there is a lot to choose from!)

This strategy has previously been effective with such fandoms as The Dead Zone, Teen Wolf, and Supergirl, so it has a history of success!

I’m headed out this morning for a “practice hike” in preparation for my September overnight hiking trip. Things that I have going for me:

1. lots of snacks

(Also, I’m going to a park I’m relatively familiar with — I’ve done all the hiking before, just never in the same day. It’s a level up for me, but it’s not objectively unlikely that I will succeed. Plus, I mean, snacks!)

Things I am worried about:

1. everything

(Yeah, that’s just me, though, I am Always Worried About Everything. No reason not to go out and have a good day!)

Just as a semi-practical note, any time I do a new hike I try to plan bail-out points along the way. So if I get part way through the planned route and think ‘nope’ there’s an option to cut things short. I’m sure I saw that on some list of tips at some point, and it has been useful at the most unexpected times!

Of course, one of the best parts of any trip is coming home! Happy Caturday!

Found this one in my ‘Saved For Later’ history in AO3. One of those ‘post-Cap2, pre-everything-else’ fics that envisions a happier MCU where people nap in puppy piles and visit IHOP for breakfast.

The Gift Horse, by fartherfaster

Sam and Darcy are formally introduced for the first time. Sam says “formally” with some flexibility. And a couch. A couch and a great deal of flexibility. Nevermind, he’s said enough. They met, is what he’s trying to say.

Time to go back to work for two days!

[PS: You know what’s the most annoying thing about a touchpad that’s 7 years old? The on-again off-again ability to click and drag. I mean, that’s probably why I’m so patient with my work computer being slow, so — bright side!]

I cleared out some of the unnecessary emails yesterday morning, so there’s that to be grateful for. Also, it’s veggie day, always good for another episode of ‘how shall I combine these veggies with mac and cheese *this* week?’

Okay, so there are hundreds of awesome photos from our trip, but I really love this one — check out our not-even-on-purpose matching game! Socks, shoes, backpacks — all color coordinated. (Also of note: extra leg room in the emergency exit row!)

Nashville was HOT. So hot. I crashed hard after the zoo and slept for something like 9 and a half hours. Woke up feeling good, and we did some walking (mostly inside).

(A passing guest took our photo inside, where I look basically awake and like I can handle being a person who does things. Then we meandered outside, and another guest took our picture there — after just a few moments in the heat I am visibly wilted and look like I’m about two minutes from a complete meltdown.)

That was pretty much my pattern for the travel day, actually. I alternated between ‘this is fine, I love everything!’ and ‘I need air conditioning and chocolate or I’m going to freak out just to get out of this line.’ (There were a lot of lines. Huge kudos to starandrea for being so amazing!)

But we arrived safely home (where it is also hot, but not *nearly* as hot as Nashville), now I have a day to recover and dote on the cat before I head back to work on Thursday!

Eclipse totality was amazing — worth the trip, absolutely!

Being part of thousands of people who showed up to look at the sky legit made me so happy there were tears in my eyes. I loved that we weren’t surrounded by scientists or serious photographers, just a whole bunch of people who thought ‘yeah, this is cool, let’s go look at the sun!’

And so we showed up and ate barbecue and watched parents make paper plate masks for their kids and saw the sun go out and come back, and it was really, really cool.

(PS: And I got to pat a kangaroo!)

Eclipse!trip 2017 is underway! (I mean, as I type this I’m not actually traveling anywhere. But I will be!)

Now it’s time for those pesky last minute questions:

*What did I forget to pack? (There’s always something.)

*How many times will I check to make sure I have my wallet and phone in my bag?

*Do I have enough snacks?

*How much time should I plan for to track down the cat when he “mysteriously disappears” right when it’s time to get in his carrier?

*Will the plants ever get watered?

Found this while reading AO3 fic tagged “dragons.” Because dragons are cool.

Tony Stark and the Sentinel of Liberty: A Marvels Adventure, by Sineala

(I almost didn’t click through because it’s also tagged Marvel Noir, which is — not really my jam. But I’m glad I did! I mostly pretended they were an AU of the Armored Adventures versions of the characters, since I know next to nothing about Marvel Adventures or Marvel Noir, and this story includes the Makluan ring — and dragons! — so that totally worked for me.)

“Oh,” Tony says, in the tired, blasé voice in which one might say oh, not another one. “A dragon.”

Steve can’t summon up any words.

Two work days left! Three days to finish packing! Four days till the eclipse!

How cool is that picture?! [Photo credit: Thanakrit Santikunaporn.] It’s from an article from 2015 about the 2017 eclipse!

coworker: “I can’t get into [program]! It says I’m not connected to the internet!”

me: “…This may sound like an obvious question, but — is your computer connected to the internet?”

coworker: “I think so?”

me: “Can you see other internet things, like your email?”

coworker: “Let me check. Yes! Oh, [program] is working now!”

(Note: This was literally just intended to make my coworker do something else for the five seconds it would take the initial program to load. Isn’t technology great! ::jazz hands::)

In this case, it’s going to be the landlord. Not quite as exciting as the ghostbusters, but on the other hand, I’m not really ready for the excitement of a ghost mouse in my wall.

(Honestly, not ready for the excitement of a regular mouse either. But I didn’t get a readiness survey before it moved in, so it may not know that.)

Yes, a mouse has returned. (I hope it’s only one.) I’m not really sure what the landlord can *do* about it, since I don’t think the mouse is entering the wall in my apartment. (I’m on the middle floor, so it could have access above or below my apartment.) And it’s not actually *in* the apartment proper, so it’s not like I can put out a trap or something.

But I can’t sleep with it rustling around in the wall *right next to my bed* (ugh), so I am hoping Something Can Be Done. (I’ve already dragged the mattress into the other room, so I did manage to sleep last night.)

Oh, nature.
