Yesterday, I was one of the day’s lucky ten thousand: I learned that the internet has a cat!

Purrli, aka “The Internet has a Cat!” is a purr generator. Yep. And it’s amazing.

wait, what?

Two wonderful retirees that I met last summer invited me to join them on a two-day hiking trip this September. ‘Great!’ I said. ‘Sign me up!’

Last Friday I got a copy of their planned itinerary, and I nearly called the whole thing off. I suspect these two may actually be superhuman, because I need to up my training game if I’m going to keep up on this thing.

I mean, on the one hand, it’s going to be embarrassing for me if I’m slowing us down. On the other hand, that is some serious Life Goals right there. I hope that’s me in 40 years!

summer check-in

1. Summer foods consumed: popsicles, ice cream, hot dogs, food truck bbq: check!

1a. Summer foods yet to be consumed: maybe some kind of iced coffee drink?

2. Summer plants: still alive!

2a. Summer plants admission: I’ve actually swapped out two of the originals for coleus cuttings.

3. Summer activities: just did a fun google search on the difference between walking and hiking, and there are some strong opinions out there. Anyway, some of that.

3a. Summer activities yet to come: Eclipse!2017, heck yeah!

4. Summer hours at work: a dumb idea, but does give us something new to talk about.

4a. Summer work event to come: the company-wide meeting with food and “team-building activities.” This year’s theme is “Survivor.” Foreshadowing, or just poor planning?

5. Summer weather: it sure is summer out there!

5a. Summer weather update: the weather at this exact moment is actually amazingly nice; kudos to you, nature!

baffled by time

I’m at that point of the month when I’m startled *both* by how much of it has already passed and how much is left. It’s the 22nd! But there’s still more than a whole week to go!

(Part of it is the weekends, I think. July has five full weekends, which hasn’t happened since April and won’t happen again till December, and it makes the month feel extra long.)

Anyway, it’s weekend #4, so I guess I should figure out what I’m doing with it!

well, in that case

The cat is cranky. He doesn’t want to sit on my lap, because I’m wearing shorts and he has a thing about it. (Yeah, I can’t explain it — if I put a blanket over my legs he’d be all set, for like the thirty seconds before we both got too hot.)

He doesn’t want to be under anything. He doesn’t want to be on top of anything that’s too cozy. Lying on the tile floor keeps ending up his final option, but his expression makes it clear that he Does Not Want To Be There.

Anyway, I’ve turned on the AC and moved to the floor so that he can sit *next* to me, which is apparently an acceptable option at this point. This was — not my plan for this portion of the morning, but it’s all good. Any temps over 90F degrees create an automatic option to Just Not on any standard daily plans.

weather Wednesday

I’m not sure why, exactly, but this month’s weather is hitting all my summer nostalgia buttons. It’s kind of weird and fun all at the same time; I’m not quite sure what to make of it.

#today

You know that funny meme that I can’t find right now about the bird that wakes up and thinks ‘what a beautiful day — you know what would make it even better? SCREAMING’

Not only is that a perfect description of my own personal feelings about today, it also matches what the actual birds outside my window are doing!

IT IS A DAY FOR SCREAMING. BRING IT ON.

[Note: This led to a fascinating google thread about why parrots scream, and — if one is to extrapolate to one’s own self — I should follow this simple advice: 1) give myself rewards when I’m not screaming; 2) make sure to touch base frequently with my flock so I know they haven’t gone off without me; 3) identify frightening things in my environment and deal with them as needed; 4) if all else fails, cover myself with a blanket and go back to sleep.]

VERY GOOD ADVICE, THANK YOU INTERNET!

close enough

Sooooo, I’m super excited to be traveling with starandrea next month to see the eclipse! And of course, packing is my favorite part of trips. (Really, it is. I don’t know why.)

And I had this debate with myself, because it’s a three day trip and that’s counting the travel days on either side, so it’s not like an enormous amount of advance packing needs to happen. But on the other hand, it’s a three day trip, which is basically the most fun to pack for because you really don’t have to leave anything out. There’s none of this ‘I wonder if I can get away with wearing the same pants the whole time to save space in my suitcase’ — just bring three pairs! There’s plenty of space!

I decided I could start planning a month in advance, and this morning I woke up and was all, ‘close enough!’ Let the list-making begin!

caturday CSA

This was week 1 of the summer CSA, so I now have to figure out what to do with all these veggies. Today’s project is making “refrigerator pickles.” I’m not really sure what else to do with what are clearly pickling cucumbers.

So after a quick google search (tip: always include the word “easy” in recipe searches) I’m ready to go. I just haven’t actually started yet. (I’m already using the 2-cup liquid measure to make hummingbird food, and it hasn’t cooled down yet — a perfect excuse!)

[The recipe I’m starting with is Quick Pickled Cucumbers, by Melissa Griffiths. Despite the obvious lie of “total time: 5 minutes” — I have already spent more than that trying to figure out what container to put them in — I like this one because it includes sugar and I am a disaster of a person who likes sugar with everything. Also it says at the bottom that I can’t mess it up. Here’s hoping!]

more work posting

Going in early today to shadow another department.

What I hope this is:
A pre-interview introduction that leads to a new job before the end of the year.

What I have a sneaking suspicion this is:
A way to have me take on more work in my current job under the guise of “helping out” another team, that starts as shadowing and turns into just another job our department is responsible for without me ever becoming eligible for a better position.

There’s a plus side either way:
I’ll get two hours today without strangers berating and belittling me over the telephone! Hallelujah!

PSA:
Seriously, please don’t be a jerk when you call customer service.

workaday Wednesday

Not even sure what to make of this one. We typically have a team meeting every Wednesday, which is great, fine, good plan. Gets everyone on the same page. I’m for it.

And once a month or so that meeting includes a guest speaker who makes more money than us talking about whether or not the company is making money. (Spoiler alert: the answer is unfailingly ‘things look good, but not so good that we’re making any promises, so if you could work harder, that’d be great.’)

But *this* week, there are no meeting rooms available in our building for Wednesday. And our scheduled guest speaker is busy. Did we reschedule the meeting to a different day? Did we carefully evaluate whether it was worthwhile to review this information a mere three weeks before we are going to have a company-wide meeting to review it again?

Nope. Instead, our entire team is going to drive to a different building and meet with a different person to review the same information. I mean, okay, but why? In the classic words of ‘Meet The Robinsons,’ “I’m just not sure how well this plan was thought through.”

[“I have a big head, and little arms.”]

eclipse countdown update

Checked out NASA’s Eclipse 2017 site, because NASA.

Things to love:

*The eclipse graphic shows the path of totality through the United States, which makes it look a bit like the country is wearing a sash.

*This quote: “It is hard not to imagine that the way things are now is the way they have always been, but in the case of the sun we can never be too sure.”

*Some good thoughts on smartphone photography during the eclipse.

*NASA’s even got us covered on music that mentions the eclipse, including Carly Simon’s ‘You’re So Vain.’

“Her lyric refers to the March 7, 1970 total solar eclipse, and this is the only known recorded song that mentions a specific eclipse. This will make future historians very happy if they try to date when the song was written if no other records exist. This is kind of like what archaeologists do with Babylonian cuneiform eclipse records today. By the way, there was a later ‘Nova Scotia’ eclipse on July 10, 1972, but Simon’s song came out in 1971. Time travel had not been invented yet.”

notes from a weekend walk

*Good weather for being outside!

*Finally got a nice picture of the geological marker at the summit.

*Every access road to the park has some serious challenges. I’m just not sure if it’s A) to prevent over-use by making it a pain to get there; B) to increase revenue by having the main entrance be *slightly* less of a pain than the others; C) general lack of funding; or D) all of the above.

*Lots of cute doggos at the park yesterday. Special shoutout to Stella, since she was the only one who was introduced to me.

*Always a good reality check — going up and down is way harder than just regular flat-ish walking.

*Sometimes I want to do a walk, but I’m not sure I’m actually having fun while I’m doing it. Things I’ve found to help tilt the balance: listening to music, taking more pictures, special snacks, narrating in my head as I go.

*I’m not sure exactly what’s in my current bug spray (I had some leftover odds and ends of essential oil blends that got mixed together at some point last year), but it smells really good.

cloudy caturday

This week, in no particular order, I have dreamed about:

1. using a skip-it

2. beef jerky

3. pop-up cards made of wood

4. a UPS delivery driver feud

5. a google conspiracy

And all I can say is: what in the world is going on in there, brain?

not actually a secret

I am not-so-secretly terrified of social media. I mean, sure, I post here, and I lurk on tumblr more than I should probably admit. Conceptually, I can see the benefits of having an online presence.

But I worry a lot. (I mean, about everything, not just my online presence, but that’s part of it.) What if my identity is stolen? What if I say something stupid that gets taken out of context and ruins my life? (an actual thing that has happened)

And now my workplace wants us to take on answering questions on social media as part of our expanded responsibilities. They say they have our back, but it’s not in writing and I probably wouldn’t believe it even if it was. I am 100% convinced that any one of us would be fired in a hot second if something we said blew up online.

Ah, fear, my constant companion. So our days together go.
