When I take pictures it’s basically the same stuff over and over again. A tree! A neat rock! A dozen virtually identical pictures of a pond!

But it’s fun, and we don’t have to pay for rolls of film anymore, which is amazing, and I saw FOUR cute doggos while I was out walking today, so I’m calling it a win.

It’s 4th of July weekend, and that means it’s time for INDEPENDENCE DAY MOVIE VIEWING! That’s right — at some point this weekend (or possibly on the 4th itself), I will be watching INDEPENDENCE DAY and also INDEPENDENCE DAY 2.

(Did the second movie have a special name? I don’t remember. *ETA: it did — Independence Day Resurgence.)

Because nothing says ‘celebrating our freedom’ like ALIEN SPACESHIPS!

(True story: I am the only-slightly-sheepish owner of both Independence Day movies. There was a special offer!)

I am preparing for this annual event by checking itunes to make sure I didn’t dream up purchasing the movies, and adding popcorn to the grocery list.

It’s June! It’s — very foggy, actually, at this exact moment, but the sun is making a valiant effort and I think it will make an appearance later.

Reminders for June:

*awesome gift for *Andrea’s birthday

*Fathers Day on the horizon (6/18)

*June is WONDER WOMAN month!

*oh, work

*first of the month — time to Change My Desktop Wallpaper, which always makes me feel Wildly Successful for Minimal Effort!

An enormous thank you to everyone who is working today, especially my peeps in retail and customer service. Wishing you easy customers, functioning technology, and a metric ton of patience.

The google doodle today is super cute, and includes a cat, a fox, and a frog! It’s all my weaknesses in one place!

It’s not snowing! Yay! It is — almost — sunny!

Here’s a reminder to my near-future self: Easter is April 16th this year! That’s two weeks away! (Easter’s one of those holidays that moves around a lot; last year I managed to miss it almost entirely because it was in March.)

Also, Earth Day (which helpfully stays on the same day all the time) is April 22nd!

Exclamation points can make it seem like I know what I’m doing! Even though I don’t!

[Note: I took this picture *before* the big snowstorm we had last week — right now it would be a little more of a trek to get there. But it was definitely from March!]

Happy Spring Equinox!

I still experience a sense of astonishment that my current job offers paid holidays — and this year they’ve increased them from 10 to 11 paid days, which is even more astonishing. (But awesome!)

But it seems very poorly timed to have eight of those days fall within just a five month span (October through February). That leaves seven months in the middle with just three paid holidays!

And I realize that the paid holiday schedule is just following (loosely) the US federal holidays, which got me wondering about why those holidays are the way they are.

I mean, I didn’t find any actual information about it (at a guess, winter is depressing? fewer farming chores leave more time for social gatherings?), but I did think about it.

Giving thanks for google today, since I re-found this post by searching: TUMBLR AIRPORT GATE LOVE COOKIES LANGUAGE

“Wandering Around an Albuquerque Airport Terminal” by Naomi Shihab Nye

Who is picking you up? Let’s call him and tell him.
We called her son and I spoke with him in English.
I told him I would stay with his mother till we got on the plane and
would ride next to her—Southwest.

She talked to him. Then we called her other sons just for the fun of it.
Then we called my dad and he and she spoke for a while in Arabic and
found out of course they had ten shared friends.

[…]

And I looked around that gate of late and weary ones and thought,
this is the world I want to live in. The shared world.

2016 sure has been a year. May 2017 be a kinder and more joyful one. Stay safe — see you on the flip side!

need a little laughter

Need a little singing,
ringing through the rafter

And we need a little snappy
happy ever after

We need a little Christmas now

Nice things about today:

1. It’s Christmas Eve! Whether you are partaking in the holiday or not, it will soon be over!

2. It’s caturday! (Always a good thing.)

3. Otters!

A Christmas fic for the holiday weekend!

And This Is How I See You, by Emjayelle

Merlin/Arthur modern AU — they live across the hall from each other! And there’s pining and pajamas and meddling friends and Christmas tea!

“They’re the best. And I’m sure I’m going to receive invitations from most of my friends by the end of the week, because I guarantee you that Elena texted them all the moment she sat in that taxi. She probably even gave it a name like ‘Operation Let’s Save Arthur From His Lonely and Sad Christmas.’”

I have scored a SWEET BLANKET from the workplace yankee swap! (I realized last night that this brings my total of blankets won in various workplace swaps to four.)

Blankets are so useful, though! I love them! (And this one has elephants on it — awww, so cute!)

FIVE Starter Suggestions for AWESOME BLANKETS

1. build a tent for the cat (or yourself!)

2. extra bedding for cold nights

3. drape over sofa or chair for a different interior design look

4. fold, drape, roll, or stuff into various shapes as a draft blocker

5. hide under it until it feels okay to face the world again

An early workaday post this week! Because it’s a pretty big week at work, with the WORKPLACE YANKEE SWAP happening tomorrow.

RULES OF A WORKPLACE YANKEE SWAP

1. Scratch tickets create a weird, verging on scary, animosity: not recommended.

2. Alcohol may or may not be banned by the new workplace policies: not recommended.

3. The CEO may or may not attend: be advised.

4. Assume everyone will find out which gift you brought, regardless of how many people participate.

5. Bring a gift you wouldn’t mind taking home yourself. (Note: taking your own gift is often frowned upon, but typically not *actually* against the rules.)

SO WHAT AM I BRINGING TO THE YANKEE SWAP?

Okay, so the other thing yankee swaps are good for is passing along things that you don’t want but feel bad about throwing away. So half of my gift is the Boy Scout popcorn I bought from my neighbor. (It’s caramel corn. Bleh. But someone might like it! It is a Not Awful gift.)

And since I felt like I wanted to raise my gift slightly above Not Awful level, the other half of it is a set of OXO clips of varying sizes. Some are magnetic! It is a kickin’ gift I would be happy to get for myself.

HOW WILL IT GO? ONLY TIME WILL TELL!
