marcicat: (snowbirds on a line)

My adulting chore of the day: lubricate the treadmill belt. Thank goodness for youtube videos, or I’d have no idea whatsoever how to follow the laughably vague directions that came with the machine.

Why lubricate the treadmill belt?

1. It’s easier and faster than actually using the treadmill, but still makes you feel as if you’ve done something useful with your life.

2. The manual says so.

3. The guy in the youtube video also seemed to think it was a good idea.

4. Good opportunity to reduce the amount of cat hair collecting in the nooks and crannies of the treadmill.

5. Because I get a sticker for it, gosh darn it!

1. physical recovery time

Between allergies and some foot pain that can probably be pinned on over-exercising, taking a holiday weekend of inaction seemed like a good bet.

2. increased willingness to go back to work

I stayed in a lot, took three(!) naps, and read approximately a zillion words of fanfic. But it was perfect, because it didn’t *feel* boring until about 8 pm on Monday night, which is perfect timing for a return to work on Tuesday.

3. cat bonding time

If we’re taking weather cues from cat fur, it’s going to be a cold winter. On the other hand, he doesn’t even go outside, so what would he know?

4. could have come up with clever journal posts

Yeah, that didn’t happen.

Day 1

Aug. 20th, 2017 05:39 am
marcicat: (freakout squirrel)

Eclipse!trip 2017 is underway! (I mean, as I type this I’m not actually traveling anywhere. But I will be!)

Now it’s time for those pesky last minute questions:

*What did I forget to pack? (There’s always something.)

*How many times will I check to make sure I have my wallet and phone in my bag?

*Do I have enough snacks?

*How much time should I plan for to track down the cat when he “mysteriously disappears” right when it’s time to get in his carrier?

*Will the plants ever get watered?

caturday

marcicat: (peace dreamsheep)

goals for today:

1. do something

2. eat something

3. drive somewhere

4. wash something

5. pat the cat

So far I’ve managed… #5? Ah well, at least I started with the most important one!

May it be an august August!

Things I am especially looking forward to this month:

1. eclipse!trip 2017

2. being able to cross “annual work event” off my calendar (plus, it’ll definitely be a sticker for the chart!)

3. not getting ready to go back to school

marcicat: (kitteh hug)

1. Summer foods consumed: popsicles, ice cream, hot dogs, food truck bbq: check!

1a. Summer foods yet to be consumed: maybe some kind of iced coffee drink?

2. Summer plants: still alive!

2a. Summer plants admission: I’ve actually swapped out two of the originals for coleus cuttings.

3. Summer activities: just did a fun google search on the difference between walking and hiking, and there are some strong opinions out there. Anyway, some of that.

3a. Summer activities yet to come: Eclipse!2017, heck yeah!

4. Summer hours at work: a dumb idea, but does give us something new to talk about.

4a. Summer work event to come: the company-wide meeting with food and “team-building activities.” This year’s theme is “Survivor.” Foreshadowing, or just poor planning?

5. Summer weather: it sure is summer out there!

5a. Summer weather update: the weather at this exact moment is actually amazingly nice; kudos to you, nature!

marcicat: (dreamsheep rainbow)

*Good weather for being outside!

*Finally got a nice picture of the geological marker at the summit.

*Every access road to the park has some serious challenges. I’m just not sure if it’s A) to prevent over-use by making it a pain to get there; B) to increase revenue by having the main entrance be *slightly* less of a pain than the others; C) general lack of funding; or D) all of the above.

*Lots of cute doggos at the park yesterday. Special shoutout to Stella, since she was the only one who was introduced to me.

*Always a good reality check — going up and down is way harder than just regular flat-ish walking.

*Sometimes I want to do a walk, but I’m not sure I’m actually having fun while I’m doing it. Things I’ve found to help tilt the balance: listening to music, taking more pictures, special snacks, narrating in my head as I go.

*I’m not sure exactly what’s in my current bug spray (I had some leftover odds and ends of essential oil blends that got mixed together at some point last year), but it smells really good.

This week, in no particular order, I have dreamed about:

1. using a skip-it

2. beef jerky

3. pop-up cards made of wood

4. a UPS delivery driver feud

5. a google conspiracy

And all I can say is: what in the world is going on in there, brain?

Tips for success at any workplace meeting:

1. Bring a pen and paper. There’s always a chance they might come in handy, plus they make you look more official while you wander around the building looking for the meeting room.

2. Or just a pen. Fiddling with a writing utensil is fun and distracting for you and your coworkers — depending on how much you like them, you are either saving them from boredom or driving them bonkers — it’s a win-win.

3. Just paper can work in a crowded meeting, if you can get away with folding stuff. Like a fan. Instant popularity!

4. If you can get away with it, bring your whole bag. That way all your stuff is with you, in case you need a snack, or to suddenly evacuate the building.

5. Figure out which aspect of meetings is the most bothersome to you and see if you can alleviate it in some way. For me it’s when a meeting is scheduled to begin and end at specific times and then doesn’t. Bringing stuff with me — snacks, water, a pen and paper so I can at least work on a grocery list or play anagrams or something — makes it easier.

umm…

Jun. 26th, 2017 07:09 am
marcicat: (bird with balloon)

Gosh, it sure is Monday today. Would you look at that. Who would have thought.

some more random thoughts for the day:

*If your workplace is giving you July 4th off (Tuesday) but not the 3rd, today’s a great day to start complaining about it, if you haven’t already.

*How did I not notice that Billy is wearing Jason’s color in the final scene of the Power Rangers movie?

*After bargaining away nearly all of my usual blankets to the cat, cooler temps last night led me to add one of the sofa blankets to my bed, and I did not realize how amazing that would be.

*Why is driving a car so hard?

*I really hope I like Pacific Rim 2.

*The cat has an innate talent for walking across the keyboard and opening itunes. Once he managed to start a movie. I think my computer may like the cat more than it likes me.

*Yes, it’s still Monday.

1. This movie was approximately 10 million times better when I could fast-forward over the parts I didn’t want to see (both car crashes, most of Rita’s scenes).

2. I tend to watch everything with closed captioning on, because reading is easier than listening for me. (Also the sound quality on my laptop is not stellar.) Very helpful in this movie!

3. Zordon’s explanation makes less and less sense the more you think about it. Alpha’s too. You had 65 million years to come up with a better plan, buddy.

4. I absolutely headcanon that Jason’s sword keeps following him around like his power coin, and he can’t figure out how to get it to go away with the rest of his armor, so when he showed up at the ship to drop it off and Zordon was all ‘You should keep that,’ he was all ‘I’ll come back for it’ on the outside, but on the inside he was thinking ‘play it cool, ha, yes, I’ll come back for it, unless it just *shows up randomly* again,’ and he thinks *STAY* at it as loudly as he can before leaving.

marcicat: (black cat)

I took some notes as I was watching.

1. Okay, I think we all learned from ‘Frozen’ that you have to look carefully at the terms and conditions. If the spell doesn’t say romantic love, it doesn’t have to be romantic love. Which makes it pretty depressing, because that would mean this guy didn’t even take the time to get to know his own employees during the cursed years. Really, pal? Were you even trying?

2. Clearly Belle’s dad has not read as much as his daughter. ‘Ah, here I am in a creepy and *obviously* set apart from reality in some way castle.’ (the snow, if nothing else) ‘I think I’ll first eat something, and then take something. That’s never had dangerous consequences ever!’

3. Wait, wait — please tell me there’s a fic where both Maurice and Belle are just like ‘hey, sweet enchanted castle! Landlord’s a bit grumpy, but it’s way better than our village! We’re both staying!’

4. Or one where they keep switching off. ‘Oh, Papa had to go to the market for some new tools; I’ll be here till he gets back.’ And ‘Belle wanted to go to the library fundraising event, I’m taking her spot for a few days.’

5. Also, the fact that LeFou pays everyone to sing Gaston’s song is A+.

But I got a little bored, during the ‘look, we’re falling in love’ montage, and I stopped taking notes. I really thought the music box would be more important?

Overall I thought the movie was long, but I had fun watching it.

I love reading the wikipedia pages of comic book characters, because they present the most wild storylines in such a matter-of-fact way. And so… some Wonder Woman info gleaned from wikipedia, presented entirely without context:

1. Wonder Woman was capable of bench pressing 15,000 pounds.

2. Wonder Woman’s Amazon training gave her limited telepathy, profound scientific knowledge, and the ability to speak every language – even caveman and Martian languages.

3. She is able to astrally project herself into various lands of myth.

4. She can apparently leave the planet through meditation, and did this once to rescue Artemis while she was in hell.

5. She possesses an arsenal of advanced technology, including the Lasso of Truth, a pair of indestructible bracelets, [and] a tiara which serves as a projectile.

6. She also had a pair of red glowing magnetic earrings which allowed her to receive messages from Queen Desira of the planet Venus.

7. [The invisible plane] is shown as being able to fly at over 2,000 mph (3,200 km/h) and to send out rainbow rays that penetrate the mist around Paradise Island, as well as landing stealthily and having a built-in radio.

8. Thanks to tinkering by gremlins, the Plane even developed intelligence and the power to talk.

9. Diana can slam the bracelets together to create a wave of concussive force capable of making strong beings like Superman’s ears bleed.

[1-9 are direct quotes from the Wonder Woman wikipedia page]

10. Looking for a soundtrack to make you feel like bench pressing 15,000 pounds, astral project, and talk with an invisible plane? Check out the Wonder Woman theme music!

JUNE!

Jun. 1st, 2017 06:33 am
marcicat: (starburst)

It’s June! It’s — very foggy, actually, at this exact moment, but the sun is making a valiant effort and I think it will make an appearance later.

Reminders for June:

*awesome gift for *Andrea’s birthday

*Fathers Day on the horizon (6/18)

*June is WONDER WOMAN month!

*oh, work

*first of the month — time to Change My Desktop Wallpaper, which always makes me feel Wildly Successful for Minimal Effort!

Things I have done while trying to figure out what to post today:

1. read a Supergirl fic

2. checked tumblr

3. checked facebook

4. read a chapter update on a WIP Avengers AU fic

5. deleted three ad emails

6. made my bed

7. took my vitamins

8. checked the directions for my walking adventure today

9. moved the plants back into the sun

10. read an article about grocery stores

At this point it’s basically a life strategy. Plan to do something, procrastinate, get bored with procrastinating, get some other stuff done, write about procrastinating, call it a day.

Habits I should not have allowed/ignored/encouraged and now fear are too entrenched to change:

1. staying up late

2. letting the cat walk across the laptop keyboard

5K Day!

May. 13th, 2017 06:25 am
marcicat: (cookies)

[Backstory: a business close to the place where I work hosts an annual 5K Run/Walk event; my workplace offers free registration as an incentive to go.]

Alternate names for today’s event, based on this week’s conversations at work:

1. Free Yogurt Day

2. The Please Don’t Rain 5K

3. Tell Me Again Where We’re Parking Day

4. I Didn’t Know The CEO Was Attending; Did You And Does This Change Things; Discussion Points To Follow

5. Show Up To Claim Your T-Shirt Day

marcicat: (rainbow owl)

1. I laughed! I cried! I saw two women on the screen at the same time!

2. I liked it more than the first one!

3. Baby Groot is still voiced by Vin Diesel. (Aww….)

4. Peter said he’s been flying the Milano since he was ten years old. (And then Rocket says he’s cybernetically designed to fly a spaceship, which — really?)

5. Possibly the best recurring theme: Nebula being 10,000% done with everything.

6. Best plot news of the day: this movie has nothing to do with Infinity Stones. (The events of the first movie are briefly mentioned, but no new Infinity Gauntlet related plot occurs.*)

7. Baby Groot is flipping adorable. The apparently irresistible waving thing — super cute.

8. Remote piloted fighter ships are possibly the smartest idea ever for a space battle. I vote we ret-con the entire Nova Corps fleet to also be remote piloted, because then I could finally stop crying about That Scene from the first movie.

9. I absolutely do not believe they were ever planning on leaving Nebula in a prison on Xandar.

10. [*ETA apparently there was a comics callout to one of the infinity gems in one of the post-credits scenes. Also, there are multiple post-credits scenes, FYI.]

work goals

Apr. 24th, 2017 07:01 am
marcicat: (hug it out)

Some goals for work this week:

1. stay out of trouble

2. don’t say anything too ill-considered to my boss

3. or my coworkers

4. really just keep quiet in general

5. talking has historically made every problem I’ve experienced in a workplace much worse

6. but not too quiet

7. because then you’re “not being a team player”

8. sometimes work is exhaustingly similar to high school

9. at least we don’t have homework

10. and we do get paid to show up, so that’s neat

marcicat: (owl heart)

So far today, I have:

1. Gotten out of bed!

::throws confetti::

2. Fed the cat!

::more confetti::

3. Placed an order online!

::seriously glad this isn’t real confetti b/c then I’d have to clean it up::

Anyway, now I guess I should go do more things?
