Pretty much as soon as I finished nanowrimo last year, I wanted to write the missing scene with the matching t-shirts. So I did.

Title: Matching
Author: marcicat

Fandom: Independence Day, Independence Day Resurgence
Rating: G

Characters: Jake Morrison, Charlie Miller, Rain Lao, Alicia Cade, Dylan Dubrow-Hiller
Wordcount: 1000

Summary: The matching t-shirts missing scene from ‘Downtime Curve.’

An easy one! I only wrote two fics this year: the Star Wars story that wouldn’t end, and my nanowrimo story.

1. This Family Just Keeps On Getting Bigger, by marcicat

Summary: Han shows up as a ghost, and starts to realize he missed a lot more than he thought in those fifteen years he was rattling around the galaxy.

“Han Solo!” she exclaimed, just like the old days. “And guest,” she added, frowning at Ben. “And guest of guest,” she said finally, switching her gaze to Phasma. “You, I think, have better things to do. You can go.”

2. Downtime Curve, by marcicat

Summary: After the world is saved, what happens next?

“We’re ready enough, because we’re here, and there’s things to be done, and we’ll take it one second at a time until we can take it a minute at a time, and we’ll work our way back up. What else is there?”

marcicat: xkcd grownups (xkcd grownups)

Three (not really very) important things about this story!

1. I keep not checking what the dog’s name is, but it’s entirely possible I remembered it wrong.

2. AO3 bumped my word count down almost 800 words, which I’m ignoring.

3. This fic has 100% fewer explosions than the movies.

At long last, the story I started last December is finished. Once they pass the point of ‘but I could make it better!’ to ‘I never want to see this again,’ I figure that’s a sign. A sign of what, I’m not entirely sure. Anyway, it’s done.

Title: This Family Just Keeps On Getting Bigger
Author: marcicat

Fandom: Star Wars, Star Wars TFA

Summary: Han shows up as a ghost, and starts to realize he missed a lot more than he thought in those fifteen years he was rattling around the galaxy.

Note: Title is from ‘Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas,’ which shows how long ago I started writing it (Christmas, not 1977). Snoke is still the bad guy, Leia’s still the best at everything, and everyone else is somewhere in the middle. In a much nicer AU, a lot more things turned out to be not quite what they seemed.

Warning: Past Force-based mental manipulation is a key plot point in this story. (more details in the linked versions)

Getting closer now — in a fit of frustration yesterday, I typed out the (un)official end to the fic-that-never-ends:

AND THEN THEY ALL HUGGED. LOTS OF HUGGING. LEIA KNEW ALL ALONG. FINN THINKS IT IS ALL JUST SUPER. POE THINKS THESE CRAZY KIDS WILL AT LEAST MAKE HIM LOOK LIKE THE REASONABLE ONE WHEN THEY HAVE TO GIVE REPORTS TO THE GENERAL FROM NOW ON.

THE END

marcicat: (winter deer)

Six fics this year, with a total of about 67,000 words.

1. The one about the 2014 movie version of ‘Annie,’ with time travel. I had a lot of fun thinking about the alternate future while I was driving to and from work back in January.

There’s Always Tomorrow (unless you time travel into the past)

2. The one with Valentine’s Day and a random assortment of Marvel heroes I like. Gotta love the B team.

Something Like Home

3. And then there was ‘Jupiter Ascending,’ which was 1000% fun to watch and also to write about. Only series (mini-series, really) of the year!

Pack It Up

4. Second part. More hugging. In space!

Move It Out

5. Then there was that point where I couldn’t decide whether to write an Age of Ultron fix-it fic or a Jurassic World raptor squad fic, so I did neither and called it a crossover.

Some Days There Are Dinosaurs

6. And finally, NaNoWriMo! The whole flying/swimming thing was supposed to be more important, originally, but somehow it didn’t turn out that way. That’s what happens when I pick a title before I write the story. (Some day I will learn. Or not.)

Title: Something Like Home
Author: marcicat

Fandom: Avengers MCU, Amazing Spiderman, Ms Marvel
Characters: Flash Thompson, Darcy Lewis, JARVIS, Kamala Khan, Lockjaw, Ava Ayala

Word Count: 1900

I have written a January fic! Dedicated to *Andrea, who watched the movie with me and inspired this story!

Title: There’s Always Tomorrow (unless you time travel into the past)

Fandom: Annie (2014)

Summary: Annie got her happy ending. What about the rest of them?

Tags: ridicu!fic, time travel, happy ending

Author’s Note: starandrea’s post-viewing question: ‘what happened to the rest of the kids?’ was one I couldn’t pass up answering. Given that it’s me, it turns out that (although it wasn’t quite just a misunderstanding) things weren’t exactly what they seemed, either.

All fics (not including NaNoWriMo novels) are now posted either to marcicatverse (dreamwidth) or AO3. Dreamwidth has a few snippets of things that AO3 doesn’t, along with a few things that are not fic.

Still working on the nano novels. (Huge thanks to starandrea for archiving them on her site!) I’ve got three on dreamwidth now, with four left to go.

Of note: I consistently fail to know whether ‘hot dog’ is one word or two, along with the number of l’s in ‘traveling.’ Also, in all three novels so far I’ve either double-numbered a chapter (two chapter 10s in the last one) or skipped a number entirely.

marcicat: stress out and throw vase (stress out and throw vase)

Basically my nano novel this year is a fanfic of my own apartment and job, so it’s — not really all that interesting? I don’t think, anyway. But I re-read it today, and it seemed okay, so I’m posting as proof of completion.

Here it is. My November novel.

fic list

marcicat: nano mug (nano mug)

I received an awesome comment from Amarin_Rose earlier this week on one of my fics, and it mentioned that perhaps there could be a list of what order they go in, since some of them are connected. (At first I thought chronological would cover it, but then I realized I’d posted some of them in a weird order. It made sense at the time, I remember, but now — not so much.)

Anyway, it seemed handy to have once I’d written it, so I’m saving here for handy reference.

These ones all kind of go together, in this order:
Look to the Sky for Love
Warn the Neighbors
Howling Down the Moon
a walk in the park
probably just a misunderstanding
(really not sure why I switched to lowercase titles for the last two)

These ones totally go together, in this order:
Monday All Day Long
The More The Merrier
(I would put ‘Reaction Time’ in this universe as well, but it doesn’t refer to anything in the other two fics. Also, ‘Criminal Mastermind’ is an AU referred to in ‘The More The Merrier,’ but again, doesn’t actually call back to that story at all.)

And the most recent two:
Heroes Don’t Look Like They Used To
They Look Like You

[works page on AO3]

marcicat: (polar bear)

Title: They Look Like You
Author: marcicat

Fandom: Marvel MCU, Amazing Spiderman
Rating: T

Characters: Flash Thompson, Taina Vasquez, Bucky Barnes, Marta Farrell, Robert Farrell (Rocket Racer), Ava Ayala (White Tiger), Peter Parker, Sharon Hawkins, JARVIS, Ms. Vasquez (Taina’s mom), Pepper Potts, Gwen Stacey

Summary: The odds of Flash finding Bucky Barnes before the team of elite superheroes who were all searching for him were low. The odds of Bucky Barnes finding him were significantly higher.

Author’s Note: Title is from the song ‘Nothing More,’ by The Alternate Routes. Follow up to “Heroes Don’t Look Like They Used To.”

Character notes: Virgil and Richie are Static Shock and Gear; Sharon is Virgil’s older sister. Robert Farrell is Rocket Racer; he really does have six younger siblings. Ava Ayala is White Tiger. Relative ages and timelines have been adjusted where necessary.

fic post!

Aug. 28th, 2014 08:01 pm
marcicat: (pacman stealth)

I posted a fic in April, and then there was May, which I’m pretty sure I took off from writing since I was trying to figure out how to do my new job. Then I started this fic in June, but dropped it in July (okay, and most of August) while I tried to figure out the new apartment situation.

But at long last, it is done!

Title: Heroes Don’t Look Like They Used To
Author: marcicat

Rating: T
Word Count: 5300

Fandom: MCU (Avengers, Captain America: TWS, Amazing Spiderman)
Characters: Gwen Stacey, Peter Parker, Flash Thompson, Jane Foster, Darcy Lewis, JARVIS, Tony Stark

Author’s Note: Title is from the song ‘Nothing More,’ by The Alternate Routes. Story ignores everything about TASM2 except for Gwen’s offer to go to London.

Summary: Gwen Stacey got on the plane.

I keep meaning to post about my AWESOME LANYARD OF AWESOME, so here it is. A while back I wrote a story for NaNoWriMo that mentioned lanyards, and starandrea made me one, and now that I have to have a badge to get into the building where I work, I have the perfect excuse to bring it with me every day!

(The best part of this post is that I tried to write it at work, and I wanted to find the quote that mentioned the lanyards. But I couldn’t find my fic! Dreamwidth wouldn’t load (google kept saying ‘do you mean dreamwidth.com’ and I was all YES! I DO! and it still wouldn’t work). But there were some slow moments today, so I persevered.)

(Eventually I googled ‘nimby lanyard harold al’ Bam. First result.)

“Everyone who checked in at the house got a beacon. (And a lanyard. Harold was particularly proud of the lanyards; they said “NIMBY Center” in English, as well as a variety of non-Earth languages. He’d had to order a thousand, though, to get the rainbow color assortment, so they had cartons of them stacked in the basement.)”

Achievement unlocked! April fic ::cough:: is done!

Title: Blink, Bleed, Breathe, Believe (first you save yourself)
Author: marcicat

Rating: T
Word Count: 2500

Summary: A potential take on some of the behind-the-scenes stuff between and around Iron Man 3 and Winter Soldier.

Author’s Note: Starts post-Iron Man 3, then jumps to Cap 2 and moves forward from there. In awesome news, one of Sam’s “comics canon” powers is that he can converse with birds. I wish that was actually important in this story.
