My workplace is currently engaged in a lengthy survey about how much good it's creating in the world. (I mean, broadly speaking. I realize that's a complex topic to assess, and the metrics chosen are extremely open to debate.)

And on the one hand, that's great! In an ideal world, companies would participate in such surveys because they genuinely want to do more good. I am conceptually in support of such things!

On the other hand, I've already gotten in three fights at work about it, and really need to learn to shut my mouth. Because in the actual world, (some?) companies participate in such surveys because it is marketable, and involves phrases like "driving consumer engagement with the brand."

In both worlds, companies have a motivation to maintain/improve their record with the survey. And they could do that by implementing process improvements and tracking in order to quantify progress over time, which would cost money. Or they could just say they're doing that, which is free.
