storm tales

Late Tuesday afternoon, we had a line of severe thunderstorms roll through the town where I work. Dark clouds, very heavy rain, lots of thunder. I was minimally worried, seeing as I work in the basement, and hey, it’s not *my* hundreds of thousands of dollars of computer equipment that was potentially up for death by electrical surge.

And then one of the security guys walked around. (IT and Security are the same people? It’s sort of confusing, but that’s what I was told.) I figured he was just rubbernecking, and then he said, “If the windows blow out, take cover.”

I had no idea if he was joking. I said, “I’m not sure how much this compressed wood and two sets of file cabinets are going to protect me.” He assured me that we were “actually pretty safe,” see: basement.

Still not really sure if he was joking, I said, “We should be worried about the accountants, then?” in a tone I hoped could be taken as serious or lighthearted, as desired. (The accountants work at the top of the building, on the second floor.)

“Who?” he said.

“The accountants,” I said, pointing up.

“Oh,” he said. “Yeah, probably.”

Then he left, but he didn’t go upstairs. He stayed in the basement until the storm had passed.

So that happened.

I... would be glad that I wasn't an accountant if I was you. That sounded like "I'm joking unless it actually happens, then know you were warned."
