marcicat: (moon and stars)

The song ‘Just To See You Smile’ by Tim McGraw is not exactly on any top ten lists when it comes to confusing lyrics. But the other day I was in the car, singing along, and suddenly it hit me — I’d had it wrong all this time!

Okay, some background. It’s a fun song to sing, right? But I always thought the chorus went like this:

I’d never count the cost
It’s worth all the ex-laws
Just to see you smile

Which made perfect sense to me — like, they were married, and then they broke up, so his in-laws became ex-laws. Which would be awkward for anyone, clearly.

The actual lyrics are:

I’d never count the cost
It’s worth all that’s lost
Just to see you smile

Which I guess also makes sense, though it doesn’t seem quite as clever.
