Purrcy; This week in books
Jan. 14th, 2026 11:17 pmPurrcy and I woke up together and he was *super* adorable and loving and everything a cat should be in the morning.

My list of 2026 books continues!
#5 A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett, re-read.
Really 4.5 stars, rounded up. It's got so many things I love: bio-based tech, the struggle against the human tendency to bend at the knee, disaster bisexual protagonist! But the big plot revelation undercuts the point Bennett is trying to make, because
The struggle Din has, between feeling that only fighting at the Wall matters versus "mere" Justice work, seems to me odd because I'm so used to thinking of justice work as being part of a very large, nationwide, group effort. As it must be! the efforts of Ana (who Din is starting to see clearly) to Watch the Watchmen will only be effective if the potentially corrupt curb stay their hands *knowing* they may be watched. You can't police every action, you *have* to get people to police themselves.
In any event, this is a super thoughtful work in a thoughtful series, not just a Nero Wolf-like mystery but also an ongoing exploration of how human beings can create a society where "you are the empire".
This latest re-read was prompted by KJ Charles' goodreads review, which notes "there's something really odd about the use of exclamation marks in Ana's dialogue, I swear to God it's a reference to something that I can't put my finger on, this is driving me nuts". I re-read paying close attention, nothing came to mind at first. I now wonder if Ana gets some of her verbal tics from Bertha Cool, of Rex Stout's Cool & Lam series. "Fry me for an oyster!"
#6 To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose, re-read to get ready for sequel coming out Jan. 27.
This time I savored the Uncleftish Beholding quality of the science, as Blackgoose enjoys herself building a world that never had Christianity, to spread Latin & Greek as the language of learning through Europe. In fact I don't think it has had Islam, either, the Kindah seem to be talking about a god of fire like Zoroastrianism, maybe? So I think maybe this is a world with no Judaism nor any of its descendants, which is a BIG change, all right.
The thing about the world-building that really nags at me is that I know more about living on Nantucket, her "Mack Island", than she does -- my knowledge mostly coming from long experience with Block Island, another of the glacial remnants off southern New England. On the map, "Mack Is." is Nantucket, "Nack Is." is Martha's Vineyard -- which she has given a completely implausible coal mine, for AU reasons. People seem to be able to canoe between them easily, even in winter, which ... no. That's not possible, the waters are too rough, and in winter they're MUCH too cold. Even today, Block Is., the Vineyard, Nantucket will have winter days when the ferry can't run because the weather is too bad. Nantucket has the worst weather because it's the most exposed, and that means it had the worst corn harvests.
Blackgoose is a member of the Seaconck Wampanoag Tribe, who are trying to reconnect with their heritage ... but who don't, for historical reasons that are 100% NOT their fault, have the continuity of experience that other Native writers are bringing (Stephen Graham Jones, Darcie Little Badger, Caskey Russell).
#7 Grave Expectations, by Alice Bell
A humorous mystery where i actually laughed so hard at one slapstick scene Beth worried about the noise I was making! The protagonist is a mess, whiny, & needs to get a handle on her smoking & drinking, but being perpetually haunted by the ghost of your best friend and too English to actually track down what killed her (ugh, *feelings*) is at least comprehensible. She's an amateur detective who is actually amateurish, and that makes her much more believable.
#8 Displeasure Island by Alice Bell. Second in the series. It's cute enough, I'm not sure the mystery holds together, but at least by the end Claire is starting to become less whiny so I have great hopes for the future.
I have now found the perfect way to insert spoilers: using the details HTML tag! Description and examples at W3 schools here.

the super-cunning antagonist is actual royal, when real royalty is mid. You can't raise someone to be super-smart unless you can pick parents who are above average and then have them raised by people who can give them intellectual cultural capital. The struggle Din has, between feeling that only fighting at the Wall matters versus "mere" Justice work, seems to me odd because I'm so used to thinking of justice work as being part of a very large, nationwide, group effort. Cool, eh?Bionic ears
Jan. 14th, 2026 07:42 pmI got fitted with my first pair of hearing aids a month ago. Some of my friends complain about theirs. I'm having an excellent experience and am so glad this technology exists. I had no idea how bad my high-frequency hearing loss was until it was compensated for. Our dishwasher makes a soft chime when you press a button! Who knew? (Not me.)

workaday Wednesday
Jan. 14th, 2026 06:36 amSoooooo... In December, my workplace had a toy drive, which didn't get much attention, and ultimately only collected two things. (Crucially, one of those things was a bag of lego toys donated by me, which is why I was paying attention.)
And those things were collected in a small room near the entrance, so they were super visible. (If one was looking for them. Which I was.) Because they were still sitting there yesterday, clearly NOT donated, and I finally worked up the ire to ask about it.
(Because yeah, I'm a big proponent of the 'once you give a gift, the giftee can do whatever they want with it,' but also if you say you're going to donate things and then you just don't, that seems not cool.)
ANYWAY I got a whole story about it, which was relatively interesting, but probably not interesting enough to retell here. And I was all 'right, okay, here's the thing -- can I just take my donation back and give it to my local library instead? because I was happy to support the workplace community, but I'd be even happier to support my local community.'
And THAT'S why my December toy drive donation is now back in my hands! (WHAT EVEN)

Baldur's Gate 3: Apophis
Jan. 14th, 2026 01:18 amFor pretty much all video games (at least TTRPGs), I typically have a minimum of three playthroughs going at any time. Baldur's Gate 3 is no exception and, while I'm trying to stay in the habit of playing at least a few times a week, I'm alternating between the playthroughs that I'm focusing on.
The main reason for the multiple playthroughs is that it helps keep me from burning out if I have several different characters who are doing different things at different points in the game. If I'm not in the mood for one particular character's story or the particular part of the plot they're dealing with, I can always switch to another.
On that note? Meet Apophis, my embrace Dark Urge.

I've got to admit, I usually stick with the more good-leaning playthroughs, but it's kinda fun to let loose with the occasional evil one. The playthrough as a whole moves a lot faster than it does when you're playing a good aligned character (and are a completionist like me) since a lot of the various side plots and such start being cut off the later you get in the game, because the characters involved are all dead. And there's some interesting cut scenes and such here and there that you'd otherwise miss, as they're only available when you're taking the evil route.
Major potential spoilers for most of the game, including discussion of some definitely evil actions.
( More under the cut. )

One of those general updates...
Jan. 13th, 2026 11:25 pmTwo days of work down, three days to go. Let's see if I can make it through them. Preferably without strangling any coworkers. 🙃
Overall, it's going to be a busy week. I have D&D tomorrow night, as usual, but my Friday game is also supposed to start back this week after three months of not playing. I'm sure that's going to be very chaotic as everyone tries to remember how to play their characters, both mechanically and personality-wise. Especially since we kinda left off on a cliffhanger thanks to my cleric succeeding on a Divine Intervention.
In addition to that, Critical Role starts back this week after several weeks off. And I still haven't watched the last episode of 2025, because I knew it was going to be entirely combat-based. So, uh, I should probably try to do that during work tomorrow or Thursday if I want to be able to try to watch live on Thursday night.
On the fannish side of things, the first quarter of this year is surprisingly exchange-filled for me, mostly because there's a bunch of new Dragon Age exchanges cropping up that are run by people that I know. In the past, the late autumn and early winter has been the busy season, but several of those have died off the last few years (you're very missed,
femslashex) so that time of the year isn't nearly as exchange heavy as it used to be for me.
Holly Poly (multifandom poly relationships) and The Platonic Ideal (Dragon Age platonic relationships) both already have assignments out, the Crow Contracts Exchange (Dragon Age Crows focused) is in the middle of nominations, Spectre Requisitions (Mass Effect rare relationships) starts nominations later this week, Pride's Solace (Dragon Age Solas focused) starts nominations later this month, and Gaatlock & Lyrium (Dragon Age dwarves and qunari focused) is supposed to be sometime in the spring.
In addition to all that, I'm trying my best to set aside at least a little time most days to play video games. It's easier to find the time some days than others, but I'm doing my best. I've learned from past experience that it's healthier for me overall to, you know, set aside some time to actually do things that I enjoy. So I'm giving it a whirl at least. Right now, I'm mainly focusing on Baldur's Gate 3, but Animal Crossing: New Horizons is getting a free update in the next day or so which may see me playing a bit more of it for a while.
Speaking of health, the less said about my sleep schedule lately the better. It's very much its usual chaotic self, which is about as fun as it sounds.
