marcicat: xkcd grownups (xkcd grownups)

Why do plastic bags (like food storage bags and stuff) come with twist ties?

[Note: I always knew these as just “twisties” but the internet assures me it is two words.]

Of what earthly purpose is it to have SO MANY bits of wire wrapped in paper? I get that conceptually, the idea is that they are to be used on the bags themselves, but do people really do that? (In that ratio? Every bag gets a twist tie?)

What about clothespins? What about tying a knot in the bag? What about the ol’ spin and tuck?

To me, twist ties are just those things that are always cluttering up the drawer, that I feel guilty about throwing away. Is there some great use for these that everyone else knows about? What am I missing?
