marcicat: (stripey cat)

Watched ‘Minions’ last night — it was pretty good. I liked the crime family (wow, that’s a weird thing to write…), the one that drove them to Orlando and then kept showing up cheering for them along the way.

A lot of it seemed to be based on the ‘wouldn’t it be fun to reference a bunch of historical events from the 1960s’ premise, which wasn’t super true for me? I do best with movies like ‘Minions’ when I can pretend they take place in a completely alternate universe, so direct references tend to strain my ability to suspend disbelief.

On the other hand, I laughed every time there were corgis on screen, so there’s that. Very predictably, I also liked the rat.

I think my ideal movie would have been the one that took place directly after this one — bb!Gru growing up surrounded by minions who were constantly getting him into (and out of) trouble.

Overall: watchable! Definitely a visual movie, since the minions communicate a lot with props and expressions. And it made me feel a little better about the minions’ role in the other movies, although their backstory is weird as heck (are they immortal? still very unclear on that).
