The thing about living alone is that when you can't find a pair of socks you've been looking for, you know for sure it's your own fault they're lost. Several times in the last few weeks, I've gone to get a certain pair of socks, only to not find it, and each time I thought, 'hm, maybe I just wore them recently and forgot and now they're in the laundry?'
Yesterday I became skeptical -- I *knew* I hadn't worn them since the last time I did laundry! And thus began the search. (It's not like I go anywhere; they had to be somewhere in the apartment.)
After checking everywhere I thought they might be (most places twice), and then a number of places it was extremely unlikely they would be, it eventually (finally!) occurred to me to check BEHIND the sock basket. And yes, there they were. An embarrassingly easy spot to have been overlooked for so long, but on the plus side: found the socks!
