everyone act normal

Amidst the many stresses of yesterday, there was one funny moment to pull out and laugh about. For various reasons, one of the on-site maintenance team visited every apartment in the building yesterday (unannounced, though not unexpected; it was basically an emergency) along with two representatives of the propane company.

Which meant that while the propane team did their thing, the maintenance person and I stood around awkwardly. I imagine their day was significantly worse than mine.

Now, while it is not SUPER obvious that I am packing up all my stuff in advance of moving, it is not super UNobvious either. From our vantage point, you could clearly see all the boxes I have stashed in the kitchen and living room. On the other hand, I'm using bankers boxes for packing (easy to carry, anything larger is likely to get to heavy for me to manage), so it's possible it just looks like I have a truly enormous amount of documents, and a poor sense of decorating.

(No questions were asked; no answers were given.)

The maintenance person did say, 'It looks bigger in here than in some of the units. I mean, I know it's not, but it looks like it.'

(I personally thought they sounded a little accusatory when they said this, but it had been a hard day, and it is extremely likely they were just trying to make conversation that was neither too lighthearted nor too heavy.)

I told them it's probably because I don't have a table in the 'dining space.' (I did not mention that it's probably because I've packed up every spare knick-knack and have started in on the larger stuff, and every space looks bigger the more empty it gets.)

ANYWAY, they're coming back today, so that'll be interesting.
