so far: cute and weird
Mar. 13th, 2021 06:32 amCan't believe my tumblr dash has been sleeping on Douluo Continent, which I have been enjoying very much this week. (I had to find out about this show from youtube! I thought it was fake at first, because I hadn't seen any gifsets on tumblr, and can something be a real show without gifsets on tumblr?!)
ANYWAY. It has magical animals! And -- okay, mostly I'm there for the magical animals. My thoughts so far:
*I've been watching it on youtube, where (presumably due to some sort of copyright issues?) lengthy parts of each episode are just music played over silenced dialogue. (Since I'm dependent on the subtitles anyway, this isn't a huge deal. At first I thought it was a stylistic choice the show creators had made, but no. Apparently not.)
*Episode 1 includes a huge fuckoff spider (which returns in episode 15). The spider is -- and I say this as someone who is genuinely terrified of spiders -- not very visually frightening. The CGI in the show isn't very realistic? (IDK if that's the right word, with fantasy creatures.) Personally, I enjoy not being convinced, because it's less stressful for me.
*After watching 16 episodes, the show so far is like 80% found family shenanigans and Growing As A Person, and then like 5% random death. (And I guess, 15% miscellaneous other stuff. Mostly fighting?) It reminds me a lot of Power Rangers, if Power Rangers was set in the Untamed universe.
*There are FOUR women, and so far none of them have died! (One of them might be evil, though. On the other hand, she has a mind-control necklace that doubles as a handy flashlight, which is so Power Rangers-y I lol'd for real.)
*The real mystery of the show is: where are they getting all those outfits? Every episode I'm like, 'What will Dai Mu Bai be wearing this time? Fashion forward, or fashion disaster? Is that NETTING?'
