I thought of a GREAT post idea last night before bed. Of course, I can't remember it at all this morning, but it was definitely great!
In lieu of that great post, possibly the most useful thing I learned this year: you don't have to calculate the tip for takeout! You can just put the total! The restaurant will math for you!
(yes, we tip for takeout -- we pretty much always get food from the same three restaurants, so it makes sense to have a good relationship with them. this has worked well at two of the restaurants; the third one has more staff rotation and I have no idea if they genuinely don't recognize us or if they deliberately recognize no one)
