Had our first regularly scheduled company-wide meeting with the new CEO yesterday, and it was So Much. I think I managed to distill the hour-long meeting into a few key takeaways:

*Everyone should communicate more!
(read: management still isn't reading any of their emails)

*Everyone needs to break out of their departmental silos!
(read: management is especially avoiding reading emails from other departments)

*Everyone should be prepared to start 2025 at a sprint to achieve the company's strategic goals!
(read: they're not planning to share those strategic goals until the end of January, so I guess we just all hope we're not sprinting in the wrong direction until then???)

I think it's fair to say that beyond 'communication,' the company faces two big challenges:

1. The push to only focus on tasks that "move the needle." (I assume this means 'make money.') It turns out there are MANY tasks that prevent the needle from moving in the wrong direction? If we're using the needle metaphor. And until those are acknowledged and given resources, the company will continually teeter on the brink of crisis. Which admittedly seems to be the strategy they've chosen, for better or worse.

2. The push for automation (help, it's the industrial revolution!). When simple tasks are automated, suddenly no one knows what's going on. (Possibly because they're ignoring all their email notifications about the automated tasks.) This may sort itself out over time -- probably another few decades or so and we'll have it all figured out, just in time for the next breakthrough technology to disrupt everything again!
