workaday Wednesday
Feb. 5th, 2025 07:44 amCan't believe I almost forgot to mention this absolute gem from a meeting with my boss last week! The exchange went something like this:
Boss: 'Can you add this to your project list?'
Me: 'I mean, it's already on there, yeah. Is this now a high priority?'
Boss: 'No, no, it's not a high priority. I don't want you to spend a lot of time on it. Could you just passively work on it? I'd like it to be done in time for Quarter 2.'
I have zero recollection of what I said in response, although it must not have been the most instinctive reactions ('no,' or 'are you joking?') because I haven't been fired about it.
(For context, the idea that even the HIGHEST priority project could be completed in LESS THAN TWO MONTHS, in time for the beginning of Q2, is already what the business world might affectionately call "a big ask." There are 'low priority' projects that languish in review purgatory for literal years.)
To recap:
*not a high priority
*don't spend a lot of time on it
*don't actively work on it, only 'passively' (THIS IS NOT A REAL THING, WHAT EVEN DOES THIS MEAN???)
*have it done by the end of March
Soooooo... that's a thing that happened. I guess now I'm supposed to have my 'active' work, and then the secret extra work I'm not doing but is somehow still getting done. DAMN, IF ONLY.
