...what?

Yesterday I went out for a walk around town. It was sort of a goldilocks day -- not too hot, not too cold, not too cloudy, not too sunny. It was nice. I saw what I would consider the usual number of people (a few) and exchanged the standard hellos. All very amiable.

AND THEN I passed someone and said 'hello' and they said:

"Well, we're the only people out here, so."

And my brain was very busy trying to simultaneously decipher this non-standard response AND come up with something to say that would be acceptable, so I said, "But it's so nice out!"

And they said, "It's a little cold," and luckily we had both kept walking as we had this baffling exchange, so by that point we were far enough apart that I could just move along.

But, really, what???

*First, we were definitely not the only people out there. There was a person with their dog right across the street! There were kids playing in a yard just around the corner!

*Second, what does that even mean as a response to 'hello'?

*Third, I personally didn't think it was cold, but that's so subjective anyway; mostly I just wanted three things. I do sort of think if they were cold they could have put on a jacket? But maybe they were just feeling contrary? I hope they had the walk they wanted, regardless. I appreciate you, random stranger!
