Despite seeing squirrels and chipmunks my whole life, it was not until I saw a chipmunk dive into a tunnel in the grass this week that I thought to myself, 'wait, do chipmunks NOT live in trees???'
Indeed, it is true! Chipmunks mostly build homes that are burrows in the ground, sometimes with extensive tunnel systems (neat!). Squirrels (eastern gray squirrels mostly in our area) usually build nests in trees. The more you know!
[Extra fun fact I learned while reading about squirrels: some marmot species will hibernate up to NINE months of the year! That is some extremely dedicated hibernation, and I offer them a very impressed high-five!]
