In a non-shocking surprise twist, the "mandatory in-person" event for August has been changed to not include any in-person elements. The stated reason was for cost savings, which I'm not sure the company realizes sounds MUCH WORSE than just saying 'hey, probably not a great idea to all gather together when the covid numbers aren't so great.'

Neither one sounds that reassuring, really, because it went from "we're so excited to gather together in-person with everyone" to "everything will be remote and also everything is cancelled except for one marathon afternoon meeting" in the space of about two weeks. Which seems to indicate that -- if the reasons were indeed financial -- that the company received some seriously bad news in those two weeks. Or, I suppose, that they hadn't been paying attention for all the weeks previous. (Is that better?)

We have received the usual amount of supporting information regarding this decision (zero).

I'm wondering if they realised that if people got COVID at mandatory work event, and could prove that that was their ONLY possible exposure, they might be liable for worker's compensation...
