fic rec o’ the day

marcicatI was saving A Curious Carriage of Crystal and Cold (by etharei) for Christmas, since I knew I had the day off, and it’s over 100,000 words long. Worth the wait!
The biggest problem I have with stories that do stuff with pre-destination and reincarnation, etc (as I wildly lump vastly different concepts into one vague category) is that they usually leave me feeling kind of bummed out. Melancholy. Overwhelmed by the futility of it all and the sense of responsibility to past and future selves to figure it all out somehow.
This story addressed that very feeling in a cool and happy ending way, which I loved! I was thinking about it driving home, and it made me smile, and I figured, ‘that is something I should share!’
So: it’s long, and it’s AU, and it’s sort of like every space fantasy novel rolled into one. (But awesome!) And it has this, the two line Q & A that made me smile all the way home.
Do we ever get it right?
