Yes! (Though I think the basic concept already exists in many forms, which is great!)

I feel like in some ways fandom steps up for this -- a group of people with a not-technically-giving-oriented connection (being fans), who are willing to work together to accomplish community-benefitting stuff (like the charitable fic exchanges).
