that awkward moment

I have a boss who enjoys talking. Usually we get along just fine — Boss talks, and I mostly listen and nod. There is a certain value to speaking your thoughts out loud to another person, like running them through a ‘hey, is this crazy?’ filter before foisting them on the world at large.

However, right now a lot of the talk is about a potential building project, and my normal strategy is not cutting it. Spatial awareness, especially visualizing spaces not yet in place, or visualizing a drawing into 3D space, is the opposite of a strong point for me.

For instance: today Boss drew a diagram on a piece of scrap paper to illustrate something, and then he *turned around* and we were facing the opposite direction, and I was all ‘… Sorry, you lost me. Which bit is the right-hand wall again?’

Basically, I have successfully concealed the fact that I have absolutely no spatial envisioning powers for the last nearly-four years at this job. It just hasn’t been a big deal. But now I feel kind of bad, like if the boss is going to ask me what I think of these things, maybe I should find some way to be like, ‘maybe you should check with someone else.’

Except I’m not sure of a way to have that come out not sounding like, ‘hey, all those times when I said something sounded like it would work I was just guessing, because I’m terrible at picturing 3D spaces and I had no idea what you were talking about — sorry about that.’ Yeah.

You could try the "if I've followed you correctly it should work, but check with ---- to be sure" approach

Do you know someone else he could ask? If you do you could arrange for them to come in while you're talking and you could phase yourself out. Or you could fake a head cold, tell him you just can't seem to follow along cause of all the drugs. Or find someone interested in that subject and have them come over. Hope you figure something out.

Thank you! Boss is a talker, so usually everyone from the mail delivery people to literal strangers off the street hear the plans before they are decided on.
