Question I was asked this week: "Do you know when the [outside supplier I have no control over] will send the documents?"

Things I absolutely wanted to reply with, but did not!

*obviously not

*if I knew I would have told you already

*I can't see the future, so, no

*if only someone had warned you that we didn't have all the documents, oh wait, someone did, that was me

(They followed it up with ANOTHER email later in the day, reminding me that the project is Important and that documentation is A Priority, as if maybe I could have missed that fact somehow. So far I have restrained myself to complaining online and at home and have avoided any ill-advised replies via email. Gold star for me!)

I scrolled back to read this to Mr Dr Science, because only the names have been changed. It made him feel a lot better!

I have always remembered a conversation with a coworker -- we had both come from different jobs and were comparing actual experiences versus perception of the places, and they said the greatest words of workplace wisdom I've ever heard: "Maybe every company is a disaster from the inside."
