there’s a reason we only do this once a year

This is how the extended family gathering works at Christmas for us:

1. Four siblings (who never really got along that well anyway) come together with their spouses and an assortment of children, usually for some sort of potluck meal.

2. Approximately 80% of the group engages in heavy drinking.

3. Awkward conversation (generally involving the phrase ‘so what are you doing now?’) is gradually replaced by uncomfortable reminiscences (‘remember when x happened?’).

4. Everyone goes home.

This year we added a fascinating new twist to the classic recipe. Instead of having a football game playing on the tv, it was the History channel. This was the channel’s lineup for the hours of the party:

11 am: Doomsday 2012: The End of Days
12 pm: Nostradamus Effect: Da Vinci’s Armageddon
1 pm: Nostradamus Effect: 2012 Extinction
2 pm: After Armageddon

Yeah. If you’re thinking that was a strange and mildly disturbing choice, I am right with you.

(However, I managed not to say, “I think it’s weird that my mom reads your facebook page” to any of my cousins, so I’m counting the day as a win.)
