Tuesday’s Story
Jan. 29th, 2013 10:56 pmAt my workplace — actually, in our parking lot — there is a local farm that does a CSA dropoff from 3-6ish every Tuesday afternoon. Yes — a big white refrigerated box-type truck parks outside for three hours and people come pick up their shares of veggies and stuff.
In the summer, the whole thing was very simple. Mostly because it’s STILL LIGHT OUT at six pm in the summer. (Not so much in January. And the parking lot lights are — not the best.) In the summer, the farm set up a little tent, and a table, and all that stuff. Now it’s just the truck. You actually have to pretty much go knock on the driver’s side door to get their attention. (Reminder: in the dark!)
AND! Of course, it’s not a super nice time of year to go pick up a CSA share anyway, so each week we usually get one or two “I’m picking this up for my wife/husband/neighbor/someone” people. Those are the ones who walk into the (warm, well-lit) store and say, “Hi, I’m here to pick up for the CSA?”
Which is when we get to say, “Oh, great! But it’s not in here. It’s outside!” (This usually gets a skeptical look.) “Really,” we say. “It’s that white truck on the other side of the parking lot.” (Even more skeptical look.)
I usually walk them to the door at this point, and gesture at the truck. “Just head on over,” I say, ignoring the expression telling me ‘please tell me I don’t have to cross the dark, icy parking lot to what looks like an abandoned truck in the middle of nowhere.’
(Not going to lie: this is possibly the most fun thing about the CSA for us. Except for the time they brought us a free cantaloupe last summer.)
