learning is good, right?
Sep. 5th, 2013 04:20 pmDriving to work today: horrible scraping noise. First thought was, naturally, ‘don’t panic, don’t panic, don’t panic.’ First action was, naturally, panicking.
Still, I managed to get off to the side of the road and observe that yes, something had fallen off my car. I examined it — it didn’t look *too* important (no wires, no circuitry). The muffler appeared firmly attached, which is the only thing I’ve previously had experience with falling off my car (different car).
So I tossed the fallen-off bit in the back seat and drove to work, where I called the car spa.
Me: “Hey, so a piece fell off my car on the way to work.”
Car Spa: “Huh. What does it look like?”
Consensus seemed to be that this was a heat shield (confirmed after work, when I took the fallen-off bit to the car spa for them to look at). Apparently, heat shields are like the appendix of a car. If they’re hanging on there doing their thing, that’s cool, you should leave them alone. But if it falls off, no big deal. WHO KNEW? (Everyone except me, it turns out.)
