Yesterday I experienced my new job’s version of the staff trip — twice a year (once a year? I’ve heard both) anyone close enough to travel (or maybe sometimes they pay for everyone to fly back? again, unclear) to headquarters (or in this case, a ski mountain resort close-ish to headquarters) gathers for a big meeting. And before the meeting there are activities. Apparently these also vary.

Today’s activities: field day games. (I know, right?) In what I can only guess was an attempt not to make the games too heavily dependent on physical fitness, they were instead heavily orally focused. Not even kidding, at least three quarters of the games involved putting something in your mouth. (It was kind of weird. And a little gross.)

Lolarious highlight of the day: The Blueberry Debacle

One of the games was like bobbing for apples, but with blueberries (honestly, a stunning and kinda disappointing waste of food, but I tried to focus on things other than that). Each person competing got a bowl of water with blueberries dumped in it. The goal was to fish out blueberries with your mouth and spit them into a cup. (No hands allowed.)

Right, so that was weird, very grateful I didn’t have to do that one, but the real issue was in the fact that we did the challenge in two rounds. Teams that competed in round one got TWO cartons of blueberries dumped into their bowl. Teams that competed in round two got only ONE carton of blueberries. DEBACLE! I’m sure you can imagine the uproar surrounding this OUTRAGEOUS FAILURE OF BERRY PARITY! I thought we might have a round two mutiny on our hands, but we got through it, largely because it was impossible to actually track your team’s score as you went, so it was hard to know how important the blueberries actually were.
