happy equinox!
Sep. 22nd, 2018 05:13 amI read a Vox article called 8 things to know about the first day of autumn, and it was great, because #8 is, “I clicked on this article accidentally and really just want a mind-blowing picture of the sun,” and that’s the kind of list I can get behind.
So here is my own list of 8 things I know about the first day of autumn:
1. It’s today! (September 22, 2018)
2. Day and night are about the same length on the equinox.
3. After the autumnal equinox, days get shorter until the winter solstice.
4. It’s the time of year when the grocery store runs out of pumpkin spice seasoning.
5. I’m planning to celebrate by lighting a candle, which is my go-to astronomical event celebration.
6. It’s the signal to get out the cool-weather clothes, even though you still need to keep the t-shirts and shorts handy by just in case.
7. I still don’t really understand the science of it even though I’ve seen all the diagrams that are supposed to make it super simple, and I generally just hope I don’t have to try to explain it to anyone.
8. Some days I wake up and I think ‘you know, maybe it might all be okay.’ I mean, this wasn’t one of those days, but I like remembering that they do happen sometimes.
