It’s supposed to get up to 34F degrees today, but right now it’s only 12. I am trying to convince myself that it’s a good idea to go out for a walk this morning (possibly true), and that I will feel better for having done it (very likely true).
In that spirit, here’s what I do to make winter walking easier:
*Put the regular water bottle in one of those insulating sleeves, so the water doesn’t get super cold.
*Put the backup water in an insulated thermos; same.
*Bring snacks that won’t get ridiculously hard in cold temps, and that can be eaten with at least one mitten still on.
*Turn around any time. (And just aim for a shorter timeframe all around — in the summer I would plan to go out for three or four hours; in the winter I usually figure around a two hour max.)
*Remember that there won’t be any bugs! And the trail won’t be muddy, because it will be frozen!
