movie review: Oceans 8
Jan. 24th, 2019 05:49 amI liked it? I think? I liked some aspects of it a LOT, although I ultimately found it somewhat underwhelming.
Stuff I Liked:
*Basically all the stuff that showed their community — the interactions with Veronica and Dina, the ‘sorry about your’ exchange between Debbie and Amita, the start of the diner conversation between Debbie and the insurance guy.
*The insurance guy in general, and specifically: “You’re the guy who has everything.” ::gestures at abstract art sculpture:: “Two of these!”
*The repeated skepticism about Danny actually being dead.
Stuff I Didn’t Like:
*Some of the things I remember most from the previous Oceans movies was the support for low-level workers (the “we share tips” line from Oceans 11, the “just gotta break management” workers strike from Oceans 13). This movie was disappointing in that respect — Debbie browbeating a retail service clerk, Tammy shouting at the busboys. Maybe the others had those moments too — it’s been a long time (and several service jobs) since I’ve seen them.
*Debbie and Lou were… friends? a couple? exes? What I’m saying is, where was my ‘Lou picks Debbie up after she gets released from prison’ scene? Or my ‘Lou wears the scarf Debbie stole for her’ scene?
*What in the world was happening with Lou’s club during this movie?
