The Ancient History:
MANY years ago, I got a Very Large Desk as flatpack furniture, and constructed it with the help of my mom. Very Large=it's an L-shape, and the long side of the L has a tall hutch that goes on top. It was built in my room, where it stayed unmoving for years.
The Backstory:
SEVERAL years ago (circa 2014), I moved to an apartment, and said 'do what you will' with the desk. ("Don't you want it?" my mom asked. The answer was 'not particularly,' but they had to take it apart to get it out of the house regardless, and at that point a Parental Decision was made to bring it to my apartment and set it up again.) I believe at that time the words 'never again' were uttered with regards to that choice. (Not by me, who through sheer luck managed to avoid the whole thing by constantly being at work.)
The Current Chapter:
THIS WEEK is when 'never again' meets 'well, it's got to go somewhere.' The property managers were flexible about a lot of the cleaning stuff since the apartment will be completely renovated after I leave, but I'm pretty sure they would notice if I left an enormous desk behind.
Still, I thought to myself, 'I bet you don't have to take it ALL the way apart -- we could just break it down into a few pieces, right?' Which led me to the dangerous thought, 'Look, the hutch is just attached with these two screws; that would be easy to take off.' (First: no, there were actually more screws in the back. Second, hahahahaha what was I thinking?)
If you are imagining that this led to a situation in which I was frantically attempting to keep the hutch from hitting the floor hard enough to destroy A) itself; B) the floor; and C) any of the other furniture, and thinking 'MISTAKES WERE MADE' in all caps, you would be absolutely 100% correct.
HOWEVER, the hutch is now off, and the destruction was kept to a minimum. (Maybe some minor damage to a nearby piece of furniture, but it's possible it was like that before!) Both I and the cat were unscathed (she was largely unimpressed by the whole endeavor and stayed away, which was an Excellent Choice), AND I did not ever hit the wall (hard enough to damage it), NOR did I destroy the hutch! (Probably. I mean, I guess the real test will be putting it back together, but that is NOT going to happen without another person, and possibly a strength training program.)
