workaday absurdities
Sep. 28th, 2021 05:50 amBack in the days when we all had desks in the office, I could easily go days without exchanging more than a polite 'good morning' with people, even people who were (on paper, at least) part of the same work team as me. (Our 'team' is kind of the 'miscellaneous other' category; our jobs are really only vaguely related.)
When we all switched to work-from-home for the pandemic (and likely ongoing), a 'daily check-in' was instituted. (Almost) every day, we all log onto zoom and, I guess, check in with each other. I have mixed feelings about it, but am at least conceptually largely in favor of the idea. They're usually pretty quick, and (as someone who is constantly concerned that I will be bothering people if I contact them) it's nice to have a set time when I know I'll have a chance to ask a question or make sure someone saw a message.
On the other hand, I don't pay that much attention to them, which seems common. So yesterday I had to stage a quick recovery when my boss announced that going forward, they'll be 'sending out a brief summary of what was covered' after each check-in. Pretty sure my face took a journey right there on camera -- a brief summary? Of what?!? All of us saying 'I'm all set, thanks'?
But after consideration, I have some guesses as to the cause of this new plan:
*Boss's boss wants 'proof' that the meetings are 'productive work time' and not being used for socializing. They are exactly that kind of person.
*Someone in the meeting complained that someone else didn't do the thing they said they were going to do, and this is a far-too-subtle way of trying to prevent people from being able to say they forgot. (Now they will just say they were too busy to read the email summary.)
*Boss literally can't remember what we talk about in each meeting and hopes the summaries will help.
Will the daily summaries stick around? Will we ever find out the reasoning behind them? Only time will tell!
