Sep. 28th, 2023 07:25 amBackstory:
I have a new-ish coworker who truly seems to believe that phone calls are better than emails or texting. And while I personally disagree, they are certainly not alone in the company.
Current Story:
This week I found myself involved in getting information from an outside company at the request of this coworker. (I emailed, naturally. Attachments were involved; it was all very standard.) After a small amount of back and forth, I offered to email the company regarding the clarifications requested. "I'm just going to call them," my coworker declared confidently. Obviously, I wished them the best, and hoped that was the last I'd hear about it.
The Inevitable Conclusion:
Several hours later, coworker calls me again. "I tried to call them," coworker explains. "I got voicemail!" (sounding shocked) "When they called back, they said it would be better to email them!" (moving on to scandalized)
Yep, welcome to the world of minions, new-ish coworker. You don't need to build a relationship or make a deal, you just need to be able to clearly communicate information in writing, because it's got at least three more layers of minions to get through after you, and none of them want to be blamed for not having your exact request to refer back to.
