I kept getting distracted writing this.
Aug. 28th, 2013 07:37 amBack in the days of dial-up internet, I would scan lists of potential reading (usually listed by the kilobyte count, rather than word count) and pick the long ones. The longer the better. Everything had to be downloaded, so why not go for the most return on investment?
These days I barely have the attention span to watch a tv show (even when watching Dancing With The Stars, I usually have my nook in hand). I have four fics on my pinboard that I haven’t read because they’re over 10,000 words and I’m all, ‘ooh, that’s a bit long, maybe I’ll go for a nice 3,000 worder.’
I still love long fics when I get into them, it’s just harder to make the jump. And I guess it’s making me a little less self-critical when I write yet another under-5,000 word fic.
