I feel like it’s asking for trouble to name storms things like “Hercules” and “Titan.” I get that hurricanes have already snapped up the ‘just use standard American names’ convention, but couldn’t we have come up with something less intimidating?

For instance:

*zoo animals (Winter Storm Aardvark)
*sports team names without the ‘s’ (Winter Storm Dodger)
*US presidents (Winter Storm Taft)
*Harry Potter characters (Winter Storm Pomona)
*most popular cat or dog names (Winter Storm Smokey)
*Pokemon (Winter Storm Charmander)
*use a fake word generator (Winter Storm Wazzasoft)

Although I see they've named one after Vulcan, which is kind of cool. They'll probably try and claim it was after the Roman God of War, but we know better, don't we. :D

See, that's the tricky thing! So many of the words have their roots in Greek mythology, but they have very different 'common usage' in the US today. So the weather channel can do a whole listing of what the names mean, but for me Kronos is always going to be one of the four horsemen from Highlander, and Maximus is always going to be the horse from Tangled.

At least he wasn't the nice Horseman. I'll never forget Methos saying "I killed Silas...I liked Silas!" Poor Methos.
