Back when I was hired for my current job (in April), I was told that I was being hired for the 12-8:30 pm shift, a shift that — while it did not yet exist in my department — would soon exist, and I would be working it, along with a yet-to-be-hired coworker.

Given how companies work, yesterday was actually my first day working the 12-8:30 shift. (Prior to that our department shut down at 6 pm, and the phone queue shut down with it.) But everyone figured this was changing; after all, this has been in the works for more than six months.

Well, after a grand total of zero calls between 6 and 6:30, it became pretty clear that no, the phone system was not shunting any calls to our phones; they were all going to voicemail instead. (Which did lead to one hilarious conversation when I called someone back minutes after she’d left a voicemail.) That’s when one of the bosses came out of her office, and let us know the phones would be adjusted Tuesday. “It’s not a simple change,” she explained. “It’s going to be about a four hour project.”

Of course we both nodded and agreed that this made perfect sense. Even though it didn’t, really.

But hey, that’s work!
