I have been alive for more than three decades, and I still don’t really understand the difference between a cucumber and a zucchini.

(I mean, I know what google says. I googled. Don’t even get me started on squash. Why are vegetables so tricksy?)

I would say where the cucumber is more crisp, the zucchini is more oily, as much in taste as use. Zucchini and yellow summer squashes are theoretically pretty interchangeable, but I haven't eaten or used a lot of yellow squashes, so. They're all fairly closely related, though, so there isn't a lot of difference, and cross-breeding makes it subject to change. The urge to put things in clearly delineated categories is a human thing that plants don't always subscribe to. :)

That's my sticky wicket when it comes to plants, typically -- I understand the differences in a technical way, but when I'm standing in the grocery store, it never seems quite as clear as it did when I was reading. Thanks for the rundown!
