So, I was at work this morning for an 8 am meeting. I didn’t have to actually be working until 10:30, so the 8:00 thing was a stretch, but it was billed as this big thing — be there to learn the mysteries of how the company’s retirement plan works, etc, etc.

Three people showed up for the magic learning, including me. This is basically how it went:

PRESENTER: I will now tell you incredibly basic information that is also listed in bullet points on the handout I just handed you. To save for retirement, you take money you earn now, and save it for later. Any questions?

EMPLOYEE 1: Can I roll over a previous account into this one?

PRESENTER: I can’t answer that without a one on one meeting.

EMPLOYEE 2: Based on my age, does this plan have benefits over another, pre-existing plan I’m involved in?

PRESENTER: I can’t answer that question at all. Ask an accountant.

EMPLOYEE 3: Is there anything else you *can* tell us?

PRESENTER: Of course. Savings are important. Any more questions?

ALL EMPLOYEES: Um, no. But thanks, you know, for being here. Now we don’t feel bad about not offering you some tea or anything.
