the owl gets the last laugh

marcicatEarlier in the week I mentioned trying to game Duolingo's league system, which has sort of worked, and yet it's the owl who's laughing now.
Plus side: Waiting to start this week's lessons until Monday evening did indeed put me with a group of people with less lofty point totals, thus making it easier to stay within the promotion zone.
And yet: Except then I legitimately found myself motivated and wound up doing way more lessons than usual anyway.
It definitely helped to log on to the website version at work (rather than the mobile app). First off, you just automatically get more points per lesson on the website -- what's that about?! Also, the website has "stories," which are short reading comprehension lessons that offer a nice break from the lesson format (and give you more points!).
[The website doesn't *really* look that much like I'm doing work, but it does mean keyboard typing noises are coming from my desk, and most people walking by are more likely to take note of whether I'm on my phone than they are of the actual website I'm looking at.]
In conclusion: why can't I use my gems/lingots to buy Duo a spacesuit, like in the Plus pictures??? I can have tuxedo!Duo, tracksuit!Duo, and superhero!Duo, but I want spacesuit!Duo too!
