While I was out and about on the roads yesterday, I saw the following license plate: DX3NING

And then proceeded to spend the next twenty minutes trying to guess what that might mean. (And then I googled it this morning, but just got some non-english math links. Although if that's what they were going for, I'm impressed, I guess? I'm not a math person.)

I feel like I must be missing something obvious. Sometimes I can figure them out! But I've got nothing on this one.

I mean in med terms DX is shorthand for diagnosis? So that's the first place my brain went. Of course it stopped there but maybe they're in the medical field and the rest is a disease code lol

WAIT WAIT

IT'S AMATEUR/HAM RADIO

My friend has a car with a license plate similar. Was there a giant antenna on the car?

Here you go: "DXing is the hobby of receiving and identifying distant radio or television signals, or making two-way radio contact with distant stations in amateur radio, citizens' band radio or other two-way radio communications. ... The name of the hobby comes from DX, telegraphic shorthand for "distance" or "distant""
