marcicatLast night I heard a 'big truck noise' in the parking lot, and -- in my still mostly asleep state -- thought 'wow, the trash truck is SO EARLY this week.' Then I woke up a little more and thought '...wait, it's not Friday!' And then I checked my watch and it was just after 11:30 at night, so it seemed really, really unlikely that it was the trash truck.
'Oh, it's probably just the noisy truck neighbors,' I thought hopefully. (The noisy truck neighbors have a very cute tiny child which makes up for the noisy truck.) But the noise kept going, like the truck was just sitting out there, and I thought 'oh sh*t.'
Sure enough! As soon as I opened the shades I could see the flashing lights of the fire truck. Never something you want to see outside your building, especially while you are still inside said building.
ANYWAY. I convinced myself not to panic (too much) since there was A) no shouting; B) no fire alarms going off; C) no visible flames or smoke. I lurked in the hallway and eavesdropped (this is a well-known information gathering technique in our building), and there was a firefighter leaving one of the units at the other end of the hall. From the conversation, it sounded like their carbon monoxide detector was beeping, but it was just the 'I'm not working' beep and not the 'I'm detecting something' beep.
False alarm, but good job neighbors for calling the fire department right away and having it checked out. I went back to bed and tried to follow the example of the cat, who slept calmly through the entire event.
