Okay, I read this fic waaaaaaay back -- probably one of the first fics I ever read for Stranger Things. I had NO IDEA who any of these people were, but heck yeah, CAT! It makes so much more sense now! And also CAT!

for what you have tamed, by skoosiepants

Steve squints an eye at the large dun-colored tom sitting on the counter, finishing his tuna fish sandwich for him; too sleek, with a long, graceful tail, blue eyes and single fang peeking out on his wide face. He’s got an oversized gold medallion hanging from a thin, loose, and worn leather collar that says, Steve knows, WILLIAM, and also, on the back of it, I go wherever the fuck I want.

A shot in the dark, I'll carry you home, by skoosiepants

He’s fought just as many interdimensional hell beasts as the rest of them, he doesn’t need to be babied because some psychic noise might give him a headache. “Are you hungry?”

“You can’t distract me with lunch.”

“I can and I will,” Steve says. “Tacos?”

Because after S4, I think the choice to just check out and live in the woods for a while is 100% valid.

Accidentally like a werewolf, by skoosiepants

“I’m no conspiracy theorist,” Robin says, carefully taping gauze over his shoulder, “but, like, you were a fucking wolf, dude. I was a wolf. Or, uh, a particularly big husky?”

Here's all the stuff I wrote for Battleship Exchange 2024! Note to self for the future: having all the titles be lyrics from the same song definitely makes naming things easier, but ALSO makes it much harder to remember which story matches up with which title.

Red, White, & Royal Blue (Casey McQuiston)
*Whoever finds it first
AU. Alex is a spaceship pilot; Henry is a reclusive artist. Somehow they still managed a disastrous first meeting. Their second meeting went a lot better, except for how one of them was a cat.

Star Trek: Lower Decks
*Travel like a slingshot
The shuttle is definitely not salvageable, and they definitely don't have amnesia.

*A kind of spirit music
The good news is that the cave probably isn't haunted.

*All their hopes depending
A simple shore leave arboretum visit gone awry. (aka Boimler and the Cerritos crew accidentally acquire a baby)

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
*All the time I thought of you
Three times Chris was confused, and one time he knew exactly what to do.

Stranger Things
*Mixtape of humanity
El throws a hail mary and sends the entire town of Hawkins back in time to 1984, and they make the most of their second chance. Thirty years later, they're living their best lives in California, because why not?

All of the amazing art and fic I received as gifts during Battleship Exchange 2024! I love them all!!!!!!!!!!!

Yiling was a burgeoning city nestled at the base of a mountain that wasn't there.
And there were many stories about that.

In honor of this being the year I read (and even wrote!) Stranger Things fic, some soft Christmas fluff:

hawkins for the holidays, by peaktotheocean

"What’s with the Christmas trees?" Eddie asked the obvious.

"Oh, well that's all El. It's her farm. I just work there."

Eddie had learned a lot about Steve while he was on the run and in the following week while they were both in the hospital together. It had been seven years since he had seen him last but Eddie was almost positive that the man in front of him hadn’t changed that much.

Steve Harrington never "just" did anything.

*Tomorrow, Again
James was surprised to wake up at all. Everything else he could figure out as he went. (AU of the AU)

*Ship's Cat
Ancient Earth sailors believed having a cat on their ship brought good luck. Starships took that idea and ran with it.

Just a lil' shoutout since I'm seeing the Barbie movie all over my dash these days:

y'know like barbie, by formosus_iniquis

Dustin makes a crack about Steve's possible future prospects when he butts in on a conversation between Steve and Robin. "I could do all three, I could be a counselor and a hair stylist and an engineer. Maybe I'll add EMT too, Barbie wouldn't stop at three, why should I?"

good times at the edge of the world, by paxlux

“I’m charming,” Eddie insists, waving a hand to indicate himself and the guitar, “pure sexy bard status, gets 'em every time. I’ll ask nicely.”

“Yeah, okay, wow, this is gonna be a disaster,” Dustin says, eyebrows sky high, “just tell him how pretty he is and while he’s preening, hit him with the book.”

is this your card?, by wynnyfryd

“That’s hilarious, but no. Steve is a guy–”

“Yeah, I can see that,” he interjects, eyes flicking over Steve. Steve flushes under the attention.

“–and also my platonic soulmate. Steve, this is Eddie. He rescued me from a weirdo earlier, and now we’re best friends.”

It's been a 'Stranger Things' kind of week, so that's what I've got on the fic rec front.

Rich From Tender Care, by glorious_spoon, S3anchaidh

“Are you just, like, constitutionally unflappable, or what?”

“I have no fucking idea what that means,” Steve says.

Aw, cute library AU!

if you like this you might also like: me, by formosus_iniquis

Book recommendations are Steve's least favorite part of the job, until he starts getting recommendations back from a mysterious guest. Their notes back and forth quickly become Steve's favorite part of the month, if only he could meet the guy he kept confiding in.

I've been reading a lot of Stranger Things fic recently, which has led to many humorous web searches like 'what is the range of a walkie talkie' (not very far) and 'is indiana flat' (pretty flat, yeah).

Since I've never watched the show, I remain particularly baffled by the setting -- a town small enough to bike around, that also has a mall and a skate park??? But I guess it also has a semi-secret government lab and portals to a different dimension? IDK, as a coastal resident, I remain suspicious that maybe the midwest is just Like That. (::quickly searches the internet to confirm that Indiana is in the midwest::)

And of course, the show is set in the 1980s, which means I have read so many fantastically inaccurate assumptions about how cassette tapes work, and I love them all.

But also it has made me feel incredibly grateful to have the internet at my fingertips, because I feel so bad for those kids, not being able to look things up instantaneously and privately! Do bats have rabies? They don't know! They're going to have to go to a library and look it up in a book!

(PS: I checked this, because I didn't have to go to a library, and yes, bats can carry rabies. According to the CDC, bats are the leading cause of rabies deaths in the United States. Don't get bitten by a bat!)

THE BASEBALL FIC

this is the year, by alchemystique

Eddie tumbles into the trailer on Sunday morning sporting a dark pair of sunglasses and a Cubs jersey. The sunglasses look exactly like the ones Steve had been wearing the afternoon before. The Cubs jersey is brand fucking new and an abomination.

I laughed SO MUCH that I wanted to rec this immediately.

Dustin Henderson and the Lovebirds, by pukner

"...I have to ask," says Dustin, almost morbidly fascinated. Because Steve's brain is weird, but Robin's is worse , if only because she's louder about being weird. "Why are you also a worm in this scenario?"

"I kind of assumed that if Steve got turned into a worm, so would I," says Robin.
marcicat: (blue footed bubi)
Been reading a lot of Stranger Things fic this week, because sometimes my brain craves new things. (Also there's a thing where once I know a fandom, I get more picky about what I want to read, but when I know nothing at all about a fandom I can just be like '200,000 words about -- what is that tag, reluctant babysitter? I mean, okay, sure')

ANYWAY I avoided Stranger Things fic for a long time mostly because of the '80s time frame, but as far as I can tell most writers are ignoring that anyway, so it all works out. So even though I need to definitely never watch the show, I've been enjoying the fic a surprising amount!

Meet Ugly, by philomendron

"This is my future father-in-law, Wayne," Steve says boldly to ease the fear on her face. He's rewarded when the other man nods and stands to greet Robin.

"Wayne, this is your future…," he waves his hands vaguely. "In-law, Robin. What do you call a son-in-law's sister?"
