It happens like this: Lan Wangji is digging in the backyard, turning up the earth for the beginnings of his new garden. His shovel hits something hard beneath the dirt. The world explodes into shadow around him.
A cold hand clamps down on his shoulder, and Lan Wangji feels the hair on his neck stand on end.
“Get lost!” screeches the voice in his ear. “Get lost, get lost, get lost!”
