marcicat: (snowbirds on a line)

Yesterday I said, 'I think it's time to turn the heat on,' and Star obligingly agreed to said plan, and the thermostat is behind the tv so a flashlight was involved, and once the switch was correctly turned to 'heat,' the heat did indeed come on! Yay!

And then Star said, 'Now the display has gone out,' which seemed less great, but an internet search revealed the culprit was probably the batteries in the thermostat.

So I, like a fool, peered at the device in question and said, 'But where do would you even put batteries?' My brain decided that the most likely answer was surely that the front of the thermostat could be opened, maybe from the bottom! So I, uh, jiggled it, and then the whole thing fell off the wall, behind the sofa, and the batteries popped out. From the back. Because apparently it just perches??? WHO DESIGNED THIS???

Good news: It did not break when it hit the floor!

Bad news: It specifically says, "For safety, heat should be turned off before removing batteries." Which it clearly was not. (They really should put that warning on the FRONT of the thermostat, as opposed to the inside.)

Optimistic news: We put it back with new batteries, and the display is on now, and as far as we can tell the heat is doing its heat thing correctly? So hopefully we're all set now! ::fingers crossed::
