I went delving into the internet to figure out where I remembered the quote "Leaders lead" from, and it's definitely the Avengers "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" cartoon. (How did I watch that??? I genuinely have no idea. But I remember it being funny!)
Anyway, I often mention "leaders lead" during work meetings, because: 1) it sounds like a business catchphrase but is actually from a cartoon, which is just SO THEMATICALLY APPROPRIATE for the workplace; and also 2) it's a good reminder to me that we are not, in fact, "all in this together," as bosses try to insist. (Can't believe High School Musical lied to me! OTOH, HSM2 did a surprisingly accurate job of representing the difference between a sports team and a workplace team, so maybe it was not a lie after all???)
In conclusion: it turns out that it's almost never appropriate to say to anyone higher up than you in a company 'you wanted this, and you're getting paid for it, so it's on you to figure it out.' (I was going to say never, but stranger things have happened?) But it's almost ALWAYS appropriate to give a thoughtful frown, and nod, and say "leaders lead." So wise! So versatile! So open to interpretation!
