things I never knew about being an adult

When I was younger, I was always tripped up by stories in which a guest stayed the night and then found an EXTRA TOOTHBRUSH in the bathroom. I asked myself: Who has brand new spare toothbrushes just lying around?

(In the way of completely ridiculous things that somehow seem plausible to me at one point or another, I assumed that there would come a time in one’s life when one went to the drugstore and picked up a few extra toothbrushes. Perhaps this would happen at the same time one received the manual on how to do laundry and actually use the settings on a microwave.)

Well! Apparently, that is not always how it is done! I can now say, at my venerable 30 years old, that I am the proud owner of FIVE brand new, still in packaging, toothbrushes. JUST BY HAPPENSTANCE. The dentist keeps giving them to me, for one thing, and then I keep getting them from work too. Voila, spare toothbrushes.
