only 51 more Mondays left in 2012
Jan. 9th, 2012 09:28 pmOh, work. Enough said. (Or not, apparently.)
On Professional Development Seminars:
I have, I believe, finally figured out why these are so popular. (Paid day off from work not withstanding.) It’s not because you ever actually learn anything that fixes any of the problems in your workplace, it’s so that you can see a room full of other schmucks with exactly the *same* problems as you.
Because then you can be all, “hey, these problems are pretty much just part and parcel of being a human who works with other humans.” (Not trying to be speciesist, just haven’t been to any PD seminars with non-humans, as far as I know.) Which lets you move on to the topic of, “If X is going to remain constant from job to job, how do I feel about this work ASIDE from that?” (And when I say you, I mean I.)
And the answer is: PRETTY DAMN GOOD, ACTUALLY.
On Topics for the Next Staff Meeting:
No one is going to get fired for not washing the dishes. On the other hand, consider: perhaps there are other reasons for doing nice things. (aka: BEING AN JERK; SOMETIMES THERE ARE BETTER CHOICES.)
