recipe!fail (fumble recovery)
Sep. 14th, 2014 08:25 amLast Sunday, I made this recipe for strawberry oatmeal bars, because I figured ‘hey, I have those ingredients.’ (Actually, I had to buy the butter and the jam. But I had the rest.) And it looked really easy.
Well, I’m sure you all know how this story goes. I’m pretty sure I followed the directions, but mine looked nothing like any of the pictures at any of the steps. It did smell good cooking, as promised, but once finished(?) I mostly had a gooey mass of oatmeal, butter, and strawberry-flavored sugar.
I let it all cool, optimistically, but it never actually became something that could legit be called a ‘cookie bar.’ However, it did taste good, while I was eating it out of the pan with a spoon, so I gamely cut it into squares as best I could, separated them with parchment paper, and stuck them in the freezer.
GENIUS. Straight from the freezer, these are delicious almost-normal square-shaped cookies! (Let’s focus on the delicious aspect.)
To recap, this is what I have learned about cooking so far:
1. When it comes to savory things, there’s little that can’t be fixed by adding one or more of the following: salt, cheese, duck sauce, or tomato sauce (probably not those last two together, though).
2. When it comes to sweet things, don’t give up until you’ve tried: reheating, freezing, and — if all else fails — adding it to ice cream.
