movie Monday
Oct. 17th, 2016 07:16 amSince last weekend I watched the original ‘Independence Day,’ yesterday I watched the sequel: ‘Independence Day Resurgence.’ It was easier to follow this time around than when I saw it in the theater.
(Yes, I’ve seen it more than once. Come on, are Patricia, Dillon, and Jake not the cutest ‘we used to all hang out and then there were Problems but we really should all get on the same page before we pick a house’ trio?)
The contrast between the post-alien-attack worldbuilding from Pacific Rim and IDR is really interesting. Big difference between a world that was attacked once (but in multiple locations) and then went through a recovery period, and a world that went through repeated attacks that were more geographically isolated.
I mean, sure, in IDR they go through the whole ‘we always knew they were coming back’ song and dance, but it appeared (in the United States, at least) that they mainly invested enormous amounts of capital into military capability, rather than anything else. (In other words, where are the shielded civilian shelters?)
Also, shoutout to the boat crew, who apparently know that when the ship rocks *just so* it’s probably because an alien laser drill just breached the Earth’s mantle. What? (Hopefully that sphere has some excellent advice about fixing up your planet after something like that…)
